STEEMINT Brief 001 - WhaleShares

in #whaleshares7 years ago (edited)

What is Whaleshares?

Whaleshares is a project developed by @officialfuzzy or Fuzzy, a well known whale, with assistance of some other individuals, most visibly @jphenderson (TheWalrus). The reasons for its existence are well explained in the following posts ..

WhaleShares 24/7 Lives! Super Secret invitation Inside!!! (Where Community-Loving Steem Whales Swim) - @officialfuzzy

Whaleshares-- A New Way to Help Minnows Get Whale Votes! - @jphenderson

Steem Factory Supports Project Whaleshares - @steemfactory

Are you short on voting power ? 5 reasons to join the Whaleshares ! - @patelincho

Controversy ?

There is one particular whale who has taken great offense to the existence of Whaleshares .. @fyrstikken. He has posted a video where he describes this effort as another example of REWARDPOOLRAPE! However, it has been reported to STEEMINT that during an interview with @ned, on STEEMSpeak, or immediately following that interview - during which @ned describes the soon to be implemented community-based token system, built on the STEEM Blockchain ... @fyrstikken spoke openly about renting STEEM Power to minnows, so they could enjoy being "Whale for a Day!" Fundamentally, we see no difference between WHALESHARES, which had already come into existence by the time the above interview occurred, and the "idea" that @fyrstikken was describing.

@fyrstikken's posting his objections .. https://steemit.com/steem-politics/@fyrstikken/why-i-am-negative-to-whaleshares-and-believe-it-will-be-another-rewardpool-rape-for-steem

the interview with @ned announcing community tokens - https://steemit.com/community-tokens/@fyrstikken/ned-scott-ceo-of-steemit-inc-have-a-40-minute-conversation-with-the-steemspeak-com-community

@the50 Posted an Interesting Response to This ..

A Whale Downvoted a the50 Post for Promoting Whaleshares ... & Why This is ANTI-FREEDOM!

NOTE: Whaleshares has been a subject of discussion for more almost one month, or more, the interview with @ned took place less than one week ago.

Disclaimer: I am a proud member of the50 and plan to make use of Whaleshares as I have concluded that there is no ethical issue.

Preparing to Use WHALESHARES !

Whaleshares will be available for purchase on BITSHARES - 1 whaleshare == a 1% upvote from a participating whale, of which there will be undoubtedly more than a few. With the assistance of a friend I will be testing the process on this post.

Awesome! Thanks for your support. People can also join us on our official discord server. We have games, music, contests.... we're even going to have rap battles. https://discord.gg/RRDzn6c

Thank you very much - will post updates in the future on the project's progress, and to catalog some of the great posts being made in support.

trying to join the discord
group. I respect all members and don't want to make "waves".. however I believe in steem
and I want to become whale one day. Maybe it's wrong to try to advance early?!

I know how you feel - in such an environment being respectful is not only the right thing to do, it is the smart thing to do, but unfortunately conflict is not entirely avoidable, as this venue of free expression, of philosophy in-action, will reward you for your convictions .. but the more you do so, the greater the chance that your thoughts and beliefs will eventually clash with others - that is just life.

I have clashed with some individuals who I very much like and respect .. there is no need to rob yourself of a quality person just because there is some disagreement, or you simply can not see things from their pov ... but do try! even if afterward you still do not agree, you will gain something. However, when someone takes harmful action against something you support or benefit from, it is time then to disassociate .. to know which side of your toast is buttered on .. or whatever the hell that expression was. :)

Anyway, you have to do what is right for 'you'. You will not be able to please everyone all the time .. those who try have a very hard road ahead of them - if you believe you have sound basis for your own perspective, then it is right and good.

In the real world, I totally get that.. however in this steemit world I just joined. So it's hard to associate to the right side when you are just a minnow. It's
like seeing the beginning of a gang war and you have no freaking clue what side to join lol. To me it's like a colour versus a colour and I'm still holding my suitcase as an immigrant (a peaceful one :) )

No no man .. the "conflict" you have become aware of will pass - and it is happening between a handful of bigguns - you will not be held accountable for whatever you wish to do. If you had not become aware of this "issue" you could proceed merrily down any path you chose and not be forced to 'make a decision on this at any point'. .. I was just saying, don't let this make you gunshy to any degree .. be yourself, be loud, be proud.

the new guy will ruffle some feathers.. but not before he is an older gentler whale with experience. In my life I have learned to be patient. I really am believing in steem. Haven't seen the payout or reward as of yet.. but I do believe. I believe so much that in fact, I won't put the cart before the horse. I think the elders should be watched, and the minnows should be silent. Not because of freedom, and not because of profit. It's a new system with leaders who believed before myself; and it
seems like I am the next gen that will help transform this system. However there is a history to follow and I want to be on the right side of it. That will only come from NOT being
impulsive and pissing off the wrong people before I have earned my place.

excellent .. a well-considered way forward.
all the best!

We'd love to have you there. With the way things are now the people that got here a little earlier than others managed to corner the market kind of so it's harder to get to that position now than it was a year ago. That's one of the problems we're trying to address.

I get it.. however there are a few steps. For me.. not just as a minnow. First discord.. must learn about.. an app to have discussion and a code that won't let me join. Then was it bitshare which ai have no FNing clue what I m looking at.. one of the problems is I'm operating off my iphone.. lol. PC is t as
accessible these days. Would love an easier breakdown. I joined bishare as bb613 but
from there no idea what to do.

I think there's a discord app for iphone. bitshares might be hard to do from an iphone... I've done it from an ipad using bitshares.openledger.info. I'll probably make a video on how to use it tomorrow but that would still be from PC

well you are followed I'll check the vid once it's done.. again the discord invite code didn't work. So I'm sill kinda stuck in the water till then.

Did it say that it was expired? If so I'll definitely edit that with a new one. Or did it just take you to the login?

Thank you about link my post also . I personal think the Whaleshares can be a great option to support people . I personal dont plan to use it for miself ! Its much better content creators i can upvote. I dont have much vote power but this is a way to say this peple how good they are :)

Good post ... No Comment ! I don't think it's wise to bring a minnow to a whale fight !

Correct. I currently do not run a witness though. Fyrstikken does however!

Thank you for the correction .. updated!

No problem! I didnt think it was fair for me to be a community leader who is also a whale (so im posting and need visibility) but ALSO have a witness.

If there is a single problem in steem that really should be looked at, it is whales voting for their own witnesses to milk the system quietly.

^^^THIS!!!

For sure, especially among the Top 19 .. something that should be looked into and brought to light. Be interesting to see if Dan fixed that for the EOS block producers.

cheers fuzzy

very good post :)

much appreciated

you are welcome :)

Read his post and read your too, I still don't know enough about this to make up my mind, but it did seem interesting to me that @fyrstikken was against this but supported an internal market of voting power delegation.

@fyrstikken would you like to clarify your view here and distinguish between this difference? Is it due to a 'middle man' profiting?

They got these ideas from my hangouts, kicked me from slack (thanks ned) and then pretended they came up with these ideas. Its ok though. Ill have many more and they cant steal them all ;)

Upvoted and resteemed..

thank you very much @mrwang!

This is a very interesting idea and I'm quite excited to see how this develops. I'd really like to 'rent' whale power and give some more minnow with amazing content the credit they deserve. Keep these updates coming!

I don't like this at all. More reasons besides good content for upvotes. This won't do any good to Steemit's quality.

It will do plenty of good for steems quality. Not sure if you noticed but it ALREADY IS. We have a steem competition for whaleshares art that easily has over 20 entries already (because of whaleshares rewards!!) And all of it is good.

So i disagree here with you. I also would like to make it clear that upvoting bots are apparently acceptible yet they are far worse than any of the proposed negatives of this.

Seems a bit unfair.

I can completely agree with you on that and I think, while they are only being handed out by contests like these, it's all good. The best will win after all, meaning it's most likely a good quality content creator. What I worry about is if it hits open (Steemit) market. There's no quality control if they can just be traded. If this is not how they will be available eventually, then I'm not worried, but it's how I understand it will work eventually.

There is no quality control now...and community tokens arent going to fix that. Its called freedom and steempowers valur prop as I will continue saying is to "reward content based on subjective valuation".

Dan never said it was meant to incentivize the best content creation ever. ..it is a model used to test his concept of a mutual aid society (MAS).

You can take my words to the bank.

Yeah, there's no quality control in Steemit, other than many people wanting the platform to work and hopefully upvoting good quality. This doesn't always happen as we chase after curation rewards. I think the token will just give more ways/reasons to vote for (possibly) bad content.

A test. I can appreciate that, but I still worry what it will do for Steemit. I know we're beta, but I do worry if it's a good idea to do this test, because we are open to the public and the public might get a bad impression or lots of frustration from this (not to mention it adds yet another difficulty layer).

Well, nothing I can do about this anyway but to wait and see what happens...

Well fyrst already has been recorded saying he plans to attack and misuse the system so pay attention to him if u are worried.

;)

Aah, well I guess that'll be interesting!

You raise all my concerns as well @playfulfoodie
I do believe that the long term success of steemit hinges on the best content to float to the top, and established curation trails can be a misaligned incentive

The whaleshares program is unlikely to help in this respect, but with delegated votes in place, it's only a matter of time before a market surrounding voting power will form outside of the currency itself (which I think could be very problematic, and wonder if the advantages of having delegated votes will outweigh its costs). So even if whaleshares doesn't take off, something else similar most likely would given the current blockchain rules.

That's a good point you raise about the delegated votes. I actually never paid it a lot of attention, because I had no idea how it would be used. I think you're right about it raising the same concerns.

I really do wonder what Steemit will look like, a year from now. Or when the masses come. It'll be interesting, but I'm not sure if it'll be better. Not for the regular people I mean.
