Bourbon flight - Jack Daniels, Breckenridge and Four Rose Single Barrel

in #whiskey5 years ago

I would usually write about a cigar and whisky or whiskey pairing but I've had a sore throat for some weeks now and am taking it easy with the cigars for the time being.

What to do..... What to do......

A flight of Bourbons each on a rock...... A kind of "why not" decision, rather than well planned, though exquisitely executed if I do say so myself, which I just did.

JACK DANIELS

This is a very common bourbon and immediately the sweet corn mash aroma invades the nose, alerting the senses to the oncoming onslaught. As I have said before, this is not my preferred whiskey and is rather like lolly water but I didn't think 2 whiskeys would qualify as a flight and these are the only 3 that I have at the moment (I will certainly add more soon.... Buffalo Trace if I can find one). The taste leaves an unsatisfying sweetly sour taste in the palate which is not pleasant but made better with dilution. Typically if I'm drinking Jack Daniels it's with coke or diet coke so as to override that aftertaste.

BRECKENRIDGE

This is the only bourbon I've actually bought more than 2 bottles of in my life. I like it because, whilst it does have the aroma of sweet corn mash, it's much more gentle and subtle, teasing rather than bashing the senses. The taste is also much softer with a pleasant sweet aftertaste. Dilution made me want to add more to maintain intensity but I didn't because I was looking forward to the final whiskey in the flight.

FOUR ROSES SINGLE BARREL

There a little leather strap with a small card attached introducing the whiskey. All I can remember is that each barrel produces around 180 bottles and this is one of those bottles from a specific barrel and a specific warehouse. Anyway, I digress. This is my new favourite bourbon of the 3 in my small collection. Sorry Breckenridge but the Four Roses Single Barrel has so much flavour and complexity with subtle notes of fruit and even some of the barrel. Dilution did help a little to make it milder but the flavour was retained.

This was fun and I think I will start doing scotch whisky flights.
