[Whisky Club Tasting] Dimple - Blended Scotch Whisky 15 years
Welcome to our fifth edition of [Whisky Club Tasting]. Today with the Dimple Blended Scotch Whisky aged 15 years from Edinburgh/Scotland.
The bottle comes in a ruby box with golden letters on it. To blend this whisky they use up to 35 different whiskies which matured at least 15 years.
What does 'blended' mean?
Blended whiskies are mixed whiskies. Producers of those whiskies use several whiskies (often from different distilleries) and mix them up to get a blended whisky. Critics always say that blended whiskies are no whiskies because of their different incredients. The technical jargon "different whiskies get married" is also used.
The first blended whiskies were from 1853 on available. [1]
On the box it says that they only take 'the very best 15 year old malt and grain whiskies' for the Dimple 15. Some come from the distilleries of Glenkinchie or Dalwhinnie.
Dimple - Blended Scotch Whisky 15 years
John Haig the founder of Dimple distilled the first whisky in 1627. The name 'Dimple' leaded to the design of the bottle which has some dimples in it.
Taste
After opening the screw-cap the whisky smells smoky (like bacon) but also sweet.
After taking the first sip you might be surprised how powerful this whisky is. But that's just the first impression. After that you can recognise nuances of peat, overripe banana, caramel and malt. It also tastes a bit like bread. Although it only has 40 % of alcohol you can taste the alcohol very obvious. Some also taste rasines and grappa but it might differ. A matter of taste.
Optic
Because of the caramel coloring the whisky has a great brown and golden color.
Compared to the Chivas Regal 12 years Blended Scotch Whisky the Dimple Scotch Whisky 15 years seems to be a bit imperfect and not so balanced.
In my opinion you should drink that whisky quite fast because it doesn't get better with time.
The John Haig & Co. Distillery discontinued to produce this whisky at the moment. If you want to buy it you need to pay at least $ 50 at the moment. I paid almost $ 30 three years ago.
