Old Malt Cask Tobermory 21YO single malt scotch whisky with Hoyo de Monterrey Rio Seco

in #whisky5 years ago

So I went to the P&L club, one of my other whisky and cigar places, located in the Hyatt Erawan Hotel in Bangkok. They have an extensive whisky collection and, by the bottle, are reasonably priced, especially considering they are part of a hotel. The Old Malt Cask series are typically not so easy to find and they have them.

OLD MALT CASK TOBERMORY 21YO

I tried a different whisky from Tobermory in the past and enjoyed it immensely. I bought this one thinking it was the same whisky but sadly it wasn't. Anyway..... This whisky has a fresh lively nose (the bottle says apple and I'd have to agree, more green apple than red), some oak and the feintest hint of peat. However, when tasting, the peat hits up front (not in a heavy way like Laphroaig or Ardbeg but more like a Highland Park) followed by the oak and there's little or no trace of those fresh green apples though there is some more wooded sweetness. A good whisky.

HOYO DE MONTERREY RIO SECO

Aparently this cigar is a fairly new release so I was happy to try it. A good size cigar, maybe the size of a double Robusto, slightly shorter, but wider, than a Churchill. First draw was ample in smoke, nutty and leathery though not overpowering. The burn was consistent all the way through and the flavour did it change much until the final third which became more intense and bitter but not in a bad way. A decent cigar.

PAIRING NOTES

Nothing spectacular about the combination with each holding its own and being individually good.
