They go campaigning for votes by doing cool stuff or begging for votes. Usually the second.
Ok and what happens then? They get paid for being a witness?
If they are high enough on the list, you produce blocks, and for each block produced you get Steem Power.
Do you produce those blocks automatically or with extra software?
You run a witness node (basically steemd with witness plugin)
