Tips of dealing with competitive workers at the workplace
By Ruth Nakandi
Competition at work is an issue for many workers so learning to deal with such competition is very important while maintaining the job. A number of senior executives believe that employees are more competitive today than they were a decade ago this is because a third of work colleagues are viewed as being competitive. Most workers view this as a negative thing.
Mwesigye Sarah, a counselor and a business consultant at Mwesigye business consultants in Mbarara, says that if you have been at your job for at least two years, you know exactly how much effort is needed to complete your work. Don't waste time, do not allow yourself to be drawn into dramas or distractions and don't gossip about your coworkers or supervisor.
‘’Maintaining a professional communication style with everyone at the work place is very important. Do not be too casual with your supervisor and when talking with your coworkers but keep the appropriate tone of communication that fits the corporate culture of your company’ ’He adds.

Workers should maintain a mentoring relationship with their supervisors or someone who is at their level or higher. They should not broadcast this relationship to others but rather turn to this mentor for advice when they need it.
Mwesigye also says that a worker should work with his mentor behind the scenes, often mentors will ask their mentees to take on extra work to help them shine. If you do the grant work, your mentor in return will help you navigate your way through the politics at work.
He notes that since some competitive peers may take credit for the work you did, keep passwords to protect your work and document all your efforts. Let your supervisor know your specific contributions because some coworkers appear to be friendly yet it is not so gene vine. Being a prayerful born again Christian will also help because God will always favor you and work out everything for your good.
Otaremwa Otuhumurize, Carrier service management consultant, says that the majority of people want a work place that is conducive to getting along with others to ensure that work is enjoyable but some workers who have an overly competitive attitude make this difficult to achieve and create rifts in the work place.

He says that workers should therefore consider the competitive realities of their work environment. Some work places are naturally more competitive than others. If you are in the sales and marketing, people will be competitive both by nature and job description so a worker should be expecting this.
He also notes that since most work places have competitive people, it is very important for the workers to trust their own abilities first because those who hired them believe they are capable and worth having on board. They should not be upset by competitive people.
Otuhumirize also says they should maintain a polite and civil manner. Try to be friendly and this will help you win favor not only from fellow colleagues but also from the bosses. It does not cost anything to be nice. When the coworker notices that you do not intend them harm in any way, they will feel motivated to treat you nicely in return.

Hate these kind of people...but they always lose long-term. However, they often times win short-term...
