in #world7 years ago (edited)

You guys seemed to like my first "Country of the Day" post, so I will continue to do this!

Today's Country is: Finland

Where:

Finland is located in Northern Europe and is considered one of the Nordic countries along side Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.

Geographical Features:

Finland, due to its low population density has a lot of unused land. In Finland, only 8% of the land is cultivated (area which crops are raised), this is low to many other countries such as the USA and India, but is about the same as their neighbor, Sweden. It is also a staggering 69% forest making it is 11th most forested country on the planet! It is also 10% water, also making it the 11th most country with the greatest water area on the planet! The last 13% is other places like urban areas and such.

Type of Government:

Finland is currently a Parliamentary Republic and a Representative Democracy. A Parliamentary Republic means its executive and legislative branch is tied together. It is also a representative democracy along with many other countries, shown here:

Cities:

The capital of Finland is Helinski with a total population of  616,690 citizens, which is also by far the biggest city. It also has some other cities like Espoo with a total population of  256,760 citizens and Tampere with a total population of  202,687 citizens.

The population of Finland is 5.4 million people, making it the 116th largest country population wise. Its population growth is only 0.3% per year making it 0.4% lower than the USA. 84% of its population also lives in the cities.

Poverty:

Finland has the second lowest poverty line, which its people below poverty line is only 5.3%. This is extremely lower than the USA's 14.5% below the poverty line. It is also one of the countries with the highest standard of living.

Religions:

The majority of the Finnish people are Evangelical Lutheran holding 74% of the population. It is basically Protestantism. Other religions contain no religion (atheism, agnostic etc.) which is 23% of citizens, Finnish Orthodox Church which is 1% of citizens, and other religions which is also 1% of citizens.

Languages:

The two official languages of Finland are Swedish and Finnish. Almost all people speak Finnish with a total percentage of 97%. Although not being an official language, 45% of the population speaks English. The other official language of Swedish has 34% of the population speak it. There are some other major languages like German (13%), but many other minor languages too like French and Russian.

Economic:

Sweden's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is 236 billion USD which is at a increase of 1.4% this year, but does tend to decrease at some times. Their national debt is about 144 billion USD. It is about 63% of its GDP and is rising at 110 USD every second.

Economic Output:

The major economic outputs of Finland are: Metals, electronics, and machinery. This gives them a lot of their GDP.

Major Imported Goods:

Major imported goods from other countries to Finland are food, petroleum, chemicals, and transport.

Major Exported Goods:

Major exported goods from Finland to other countries are electrical equipment, optical equipment, and machinery.

Problems Facing the Country:

Finland is facing economic problems, mainly it not recovering from its financial crisis. Its economic growth is much lower than most other countries and has lost a 8% of its GDP one year. It doesn't seem to be catching up with its neighbors.

That concludes the country of the day. Please feel free to write suggestions in the comments and other countries that you want me to do!
