Di Grup E Piala Dunia 2018, Costa Rica dipastikan menjadi Tim ke 5 yang tersingkir. Dua gol di akhir laga dari Coutinho Dan Neymar menghentikan langkah Costa Rica ke 16 Besar setelah menelan 2 kekalahan.
Sementara Swiss berhasil menang lewat gol di akhir laga dari Shaqiri, 2-1 atas Serbia. Kini, Serbia wajib menang atas Brazil untuk lolos ke fase gugur di pertandingan ke 3, sementara Costa Rica akan memainkan pertandingan ke 3 melawan Swiss.
