I want the Cyberpunk Bar to become its own Sub-Genre and not just a Trope
With the released of the video game VA-11 HALL-A two years ago and the much sooner released The Red String Club I have come to the conclusion that Bar in Cyberpunk need to be more than a simple trope in the genre and instead should be its sub-genre.
- Why?
Because there is too little of them.
Bars in fiction have been used to study humans at there lowest point. A man drinking himself down after the death of his wife or a petty scammer trying to rip off said man for only a few credits. But bars have been also used to view the unity of humans as well. That man could find a new love in the bar and slowly repair his life or co-worker are celebrating a finished well payed contract. Bars show the high and low of human beings.
- A more darker vision of the human condition
Cyberpunk's entire appeal is that human beings are "Human Beings". In a lot science fiction literature, character are more used to present an idea as opposed to be a person. You can see this a lot in books like 2312 where the two main protagonist are less important than to show off a enormous world. Cyberpunk on the other hand focuses less on the world and more on the characters. This is why you see Cyberpunk protagonist being more on the gray scale of morality. Darker characters generally need more characterization to get the audience to root for him/her or at the least care if they fail.
- Bars also show a dark side to humans
Bars bring out a lot in the more darker aspects of characters. In VA-11 HALL-A most of the people that you serve have fundamental problems that you would not see anywhere else. With no spoilers there is an option to make a person more drunk by increasing the alcohol in the drink. A number of times it is used more for comedic purposes there are times when you see a side of the person that you would not expect. This brings us closer to the character and there are many characters in VA-11 HALL-A which in other Cyberpunk stories we could not possible meet nor understand the people in that world. - Conclusion
Bars go incredibly well with the Cyberpunk genre and it is such a shame that there is so little out there. While exploring the cityscape of Chiba City or the deep depths of Coruscant it is important to show a more smaller world with larger characters. All I hope in the future is that more people will take after VA-11 HALL-A and The Red String Club and start there own creations with it. I hope that in time I am right.
If you have not play VA-11 HALL-A or The Red String Club then I implore you to and if you now any cyberpunk books, movies, video games, etc... that utilizes a strong bar presence then please post some down in the comment section.
