Dark King, White Queen

in #writing7 years ago (edited)

In the world of white people all lived in harmony, their ivory towers acted as powerful fortresses and their crystal horses along with their white-armored riders protected the great king and his queen. What no one knew was that the White Queen yearned for something beyond the snowy perfection of her kingdom.

In the world of the Dark, silence and shadows reign. Towers of onyx guard the kingdom and horses of smoke with horsemen of bone protect their king and his queen. What nobody knows is that the Dark King poses every night his gaze on the moon, thinking of her.

The White Queen was heartbroken at that last battle. Her husband was determined to demonstrate his power and seize the Dark Kingdom. For a long time, the Queen spent her sleepless nights thinking about that knight in black Onyx armor who had seen long ago in the Dark Kingdom's remoteness from her ivory tower. She knew that he had been named King a few years ago, almost simultaneously with her. She married her husband for conveniences and arrangements, whites marry with whites, that's how things were handled. What a scandal it would have been for someone to find out that the White Queen was in love with the Dark King!

The Dark King abhorred the idea of exposing her to such a great danger, but knew that there was no alternative, could not ignore a decree of war. His marriage, like hers, was the fruit of a loveless arrangement. The only time he had felt love had been that time, when from his post as a guard he had seen her at the top of his tower, white as the moon in contrast to the darkness of the night. Standing in front of her and seeing her in the same way that she would surely see him, as the leader of the enemy, broke his heart.

The battle began before she knew it. Around them, pawns, bishops, and horses fell everywhere, they were lost, but their lord husband was too proud to recognize defeat. Nothing hurt her more than to see him, dark as a shadow, at the other end of the battlefield with another at his side.

The Dark King remembers that day with torment and agonizing pain in his chest. His queen was euphoric to see how the enemy was devastated without mercy, but he could not stop looking at her, white and elegant, like an angel trapped in the midst of a war.

In a time of crisis threatening the well-being of his people, she bravely fulfilled her duty as Queen interposing between one of the dark soldiers and the White King. It was at that moment, witnessing how his small, innocent moonlight collapsed inertly to the ground when the Dark King lost everything to which he had clung so many years.

When she took his place in front of his king to defend him from the imminent threat, she kept her gaze fixed on the other end of the field where her love was, she looked fixedly into his eyes and in a scarcely audible sigh she confessed to that Shadow King what she had long hidden in his heart.

-I love you... -and it expired.
