Poopies are 'annuals' and flower, scatter their seeds and die in just one year. Buds appear in early summer, then open up as it gets warmer, releasing a flower which is fully grown by midsummer. Once pollinated, their petals wither and fall off leaving a seed copsule. By autumn, the copsule has dried and developed holes, and the ripe seeds can be shaken out by the wind.

  1. The fullyformed flower is packed inside a bud enclosed by the green 'petals'

  2. Once the weather is warm enough the bud begins to open.

  3. The petals open wider and the petals grow outwards and backwards.

  4. The poppy is now fully grown and ready to attract insects. Poppy flowers always have four petals

  5. After pollination the petals fall away leaving a seed capsule
6.By autumn, small holes appear at the top of the dry capsule do seeds can be shaken out.
