Woman Writer Quote of the Day:

“That’s the problem with men my age, I’m somehow older than them.” By Miranda July in The First Bad Man (Scribner, 2015)

Miranda July (U.S. 1974-) is a filmmaker, actor and artist as well as a writer.

The First Bad Man was her first novel, but before that she published a collection of short stories called No One Belongs Here More Than You that won the Frank O’Conor International Short Story Award in 2007.

Her work often features the interior world of her women characters told by wry narrators on the verge of disequilibrium.

In an interview in The New Yorker magazine in August 2017, July states,

I’m always interested to hear how a woman conceives of herself as a sexual person, because there is really no map for this, only a series of contradictory and shaming warnings.

This is a list of Miranda July’s favourite short stories:    ·

  • Diane Cook’s “Somebody’s Baby”
  • Nina Berberova’s “The Tattered Cloak”
  • Jamaica Kincaid’s story “Girl”
  • Alice Munro’s“My Mother’s Dream”

Happy reading and bye for now,
