Nothing Has Changed

Is it funny that I find it funny whenever I see my people laughing? I think it was some time between the 70s and 80s, many years before the idea of conceiving me into this vile filled society was borne, a Nigerian activitist and musician with a knack for putting bluntly composed a song that quite rightly depicted the society he lived in.

In this song, amongst the hoards of wisdom embeded in his lyrics, he depicted a society where people deceive themselves with hope in God and refuse to face realities. In his words, we're "shuffering and Shmiling" because some pastor or imam living lavishly promises hope for the starving populace. He talks about how these "Holy men" promise an eternity of happiness in Heaven while they live in opulence.

In the 30 or so years that have passed since this song was made, not much has changed. It's fairly safe to say that things have gotten "worst" if that's even the comparative term to use. People in my society often depict my views as being pessimistic but what can I do when the onoly realistic outcome in sight is negative? we're suffering and smiling.
