Short Story: PERSPIRATION
credit
As she ran through the uneven road, filled with sharp stones, thistle, cactus plants and thorns. Terror enveloped her heart, her brown hair in disarray as she swung it back to glance at her back. Someone was after her but she didn't know who it was, breathing heavily as she sat on a stone under a tree. Suddenly, the leaves on the tree withered, exposing her bare back to the scorching sun. She cried out in pain, blood was oozing from her big toe, one of the sharp stones on the ground slashed through it.
Her eyes widened in alarm as the earth began to shake vigorously, a deafening sound was heard, the ground opened up and swallowed her shrieks as she went in. She looked around, having landed on the muddy and grubby ground; the atmosphere had a pungent smell; millions of ants were crawling around, the sight was revolting. Horrified, she hurriedly stood up and tried to walk but her legs were sinking into the ground.the quick sand was pulling her in; she struggled to free her legs but the more she moved the more she went in till her head could no longer be seen.
Startled to find herself on a green pasture, the things happening were too hard for her to comprehend. She saw an apple tree from afar, her stomach groaned and grumbled. Stretching her hand to pluck one ,she was interrupted.
"Stop that!" Someone bellowed. She turned and saw a small wiry old man who cast a hateful glance at her,and frightened, she took to her heels. The old man ran after her with agility, she was amazed at his speed and tried to run faster but it seemed she was running on a spot. She looked back to see he was carrying an axe, the head glistened, and he was already catching up with her.
"Noooooo" she mouthed, the scream escaping her lungs as the axe came upon her head, decapitating her
"Noooooo" Sewa shouted and woke up, she looked around to confirm where she was. The early morning rays were coming in through the venetian blinds, her room interior decoration was still the different shades of pink colour, clothes pouring out from her wardrobe, novels scattered on the floor, wrappers of chocolates and biscuits littering the room. "Thank God, it was just a dream", she stood up from her four poster bed heading to the toilet, her feet hardly making a noise on the soft fur rug. After washing her face, she peered into the mirror. Expecting to see her oval shaped face instead she saw a wrinkled face of an old woman with rabbit ears and teeth. "Nooooooooo" she cried out and passed out.
I will far rather see the race of man extinct than that we should become less than beasts by making the noblest of God's creation, woman, the object of our lust.
- Mahatma Gandhi
I would be scared too if any old man sprinted at me with agility. Great story.
