Midnight In Kosco (Chapter Eight)

MIDNIGHT IN KOSCO Chapter 8

Shitta slowed his stride to allow Feto overtake him. He hadn't been feeling too good, and more so had spilled his stomach contents by a bush while Feto played catch up. He was seeing things that weren't real... The strange bird had stayed above him and his friends as they left the city. It slalomed between thick rain clouds (he could almost touch them on tiptoes) every now and then. His mother always said night birds were bad omens.
A while ago, just as Feto and he left Xami and Kamal behind, he'd noticed movements within the surrounding foliage. Humans definitely knew better than that, unless they were suicidal. He also suspected it could be that his stupidity at play.
Shitta had never felt so scared in his life. He felt Lisa was responsible for the dizziness and lose of mind he was feeling. No, without doubt. According to his mother, Lisa was a sweet-tongued, alley-wise, riff-raff, scum of the underworld, orphan raised by the oracles... and he had let her kissed him!
He had to lie down (mother said to always do so in this situation), had to let his inner body mechanism be at peace with the outside.
Shitta spotted the bird again immediately his back touched the ground. It hovered above his head for some time, and then froze. He thought to himself, fine, let it hang there. Monitor my life, Lisa, it won't change his mind on their break-up. As long as he was lying down right now, nothing else mattered. Xami and Kamal were probably having the time of their lives right now, and Feto was still basking in the euphoria of sneaking past guards at the entrance to Kosco.
The red light dot on Xami's neck vanished immediately Kamal saw it. In the same instant his eyes caught the fly device above them. Xami must've felt him go limp inside her, and seen the horror in his eyes when she opened hers; she gazed skywards suddenly and leaped off him - painfully - with outstretched hands.
She never made it to the drone: Kamal saw the red light transform from a ray into a bullet that blasted its way through Xami's head, with promises to spill his own white matter if he hadn't moved. Once he rolled to safety, he caught Xami and fled.
Chudi swallowed as the man-beast twisted Ada's neck; its ageless eyes shut in anticipation of savour as its mouth opened to reveal folklore fangs that closed around her neck. He didn't believe what happened next.
The head of the creature exploded suddenly from two successive blasts that emanated from nowere! A flying saucer above? The crash of the two bodies on each other was all the cue Chudi needed to finally run.
Kamal sighed in regret as footsteps approached his position. He scanned the trees around, bushes and ground below, saw the drone flying through the thick canopies in search for him (and his friends who were probably dead or not). Whoever they were, their weapons were well equipped. Steel bullets can't just take out a Crawler, no. Not the way Xami went instantly
Tonight was a mistake, and Kamal knew the council won't hesitate to have his head if they found out their Chief's daughter had been killed by humans. Especially when she was by his side. He should've died in her place.
The device was heading towards him now, time to act... Humans, their scents became stronger as they approached the boaboab he was on. He knew it won't be long till the flying device picked him out. He'd rather pick the damn device apart first. The vantage point was good, he could make out the number of soldiers on foot with their stupid vests
Time to make them pay for tonight, and for the doom ahead - he could picture it, well, hadn't he and his friends stepped out of Kosco against orders not too? His friends were dead, to late to go back, he thought, and leaped onto the soldier below him.
