North Aceh Economic Expectations, Lhokseumawe and Surrounding Post Conflict

A. Flashback

My childhood lives in the interior of North Aceh in addition to the oil fields run by Mobil Oil Inc. where the oil field is known as a group bounded by iron fences, bright lights and neat buildings and pipes neatly arranged as part of the Arun gas field. which serves to inject water so that the gas out of the well through the pipe has been arranged in such a way to flow to the gas processing plant in Krueng Geukueh Lhokseumawe. The entire population depends on the economic life of the people from the presence of a gigantic project, ranging from workshops, rice sellers, motorcycles and cars and many other small economic sectors around the gas field. What a luxurious place in a village village and now only sweet memories. The current condition is nothing more than a field into a pile of scrap metal, dark and arid in broad daylight.

Lhokseumawe was once an industrial city with several large companies in its territory. Call it PT PIM (PT Pupuk Iskandar Muda), PT AAF (Asean Asean Fertilizer) and PT KKA (PT Kertas Kraft Aceh). The company was able to stand because of the supply of gas to support its giant machine from the Aron gas field. In addition, the gas is exported to foreign countries where all the rupiah goes into the pockets of the country.

B. The Period of Armed Conflict

The presence of these five national and even international giant corporations has become anti-climatic in the socio-political economic joints of Aceh in general and the Lhokseumawe region in particular. The massive exploitation of natural resources with an economic boom has resulted in wide social, cultural and economic inequalities, particularly in the local population. This inequality fosters the Free Aceh Movement led by Teungku Hasan di Tiro.

The reform era enjoyed by the Indonesian people with euphoria, is inversely proportional to what happened in Aceh. The authors themselves witnessed the armed conflict causing the gripping lives of the people, the roads that should have been the economic arena and the development even quiet of the crowd, the electricity is often extinguished, and the distribution of fuel faltered. The fighting between the police and the Indonesian military with the Free Aceh Movement is common everywhere. Economic infrastructure and economic supra structures in Pidie regency, Pide Jaya regency, Bireun regency, North Aceh district, Lhokseumawe city, and East Aceh district are abandoned and facum, if not to be said to be destroyed.

The Aceh conflict at the time of the Military Operations is considered to be the worst point, in northern Aceh, for example, there is a tremendous wealth of natural resources in the form of liquefied natural gas and petroleum in Lhokseumawe attracting foreign investors to come to Aceh. Since then, liquefied natural gas has been processed by PT Arun Natural Gas Liquefaction (NGL) from Exxon Mobil Oil Inc. Installation. Lhokseumawe has been made the area of Petro Kimia Industries Modern.

C. Post-Peace Economic Development

The Special Economic Zone of Arun Lhokseumawe was established under Government Regulation No. 5 of 2017, on February 17, 2017. This means that less than a year the Special Economic Zone located in Aceh Utara Regency and Lhokseumawe City can be officially operated. In fact, the government itself gives three years since the Special Economic Zone is set up to operate.

The impact of development and management of Special Economic Zone Arun is expected to affect the real sector and create employment," said the Governor in a speech read by the Secretary of Aceh Dermawan MM., At the signing of Consortium SEZ Arun, in the formation of PT. Patriot Nusantara Aceh as Enterprises for Development and Management of Special Economic Zones Arun Lhokseumawe, in Room Regional Potential, Saturday (10/11/2010)

Along with the statement of the Governor of Aceh, the impact of the presence of Special Economic Zone began to be felt by the community. The pulse of the private sector economy in Lhokseumawe City has begun to feel warm and comfortable. A landlord called his name Mr. Hasballah said that his strategic turnover of store and office building had been abandoned, no one rented or bought, but entering early 2018, Mr. Hasballah was flooded with land and property lease orders.
Most of the land is rented for small and medium-sized businesses such as workshops, land transportation counters, and culinary while some shops are required by renters for small warehousing.
Finally, hopefully Lhokseumawe City which has been hit by conflict for decades get new hope either directly or multiple effects from existence of Special Economic Zone. Hopefully Aceh is always peaceful and prosperous, I love peace, I am sure you love peace, and we all love peace.
