RE: STACH Short Story Contest #18: 199 words, 5 winners, 15SBD prize pool!
With a flute on her mouth, Sophia sits down in a corner of a busy motor park singing a variety of songs. One of the songs which cut my attention was:
The Best Friend to have is Jesus; He will hear me when I call; He will keep me lest I fall; Oh the best friend to have is Jesus...
Not only the uncommon skills that seem to be imprinted on her trained fingers but also the infectious beam of smiles that radiated from the her perspiring face. The performance of the art seem to have naturally followed Sophia from the mother's womb. The sound of the flute exactly rhymes with the nodding of the excited head and the movement of the hip and the legs. Every passerby who crossed the spot could hardly hold the body from spontaneously shaking and responding to the sweet melodies from Sophia's flute. It was a display of competence and unrivaled endowment. Learning to play the flute overtook every hobby in the community and became the passion of indigenes of Eziama Uli, Anambra State, Nigeria from where Sophia received a celebrated nationality. School children could be seen carrying and practicing with flutes.
