The lost meaning of some phrases

in #writing7 years ago

We all know the phrase "curiosity killed the cat", meant mostly as a warning when someone is getting too curious, but did you know there is more to it?

Source

The full phrase is:

"Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back"

I bet your parents never told you the rest, did they? What i am trying to say here, is that sometimes it's good to be curious, it's good to be interested in the world and in people and to know everything there is to know about your interests.

Another one of the phrases that in time got chopped is "blood is ticker than water", referring most of the times to family bonds and how family it's more important than anything, which is not the case for everyone.

Source

The full phrase is:

"The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb."

More often than not, the relationships we form by choice are stronger than those formed by blood. I was fortunate enough to have a family that always had my back and supported all my actions as long as i was happy.

Another phrase worth mentioning here is "Jack of all trades, master of none". Now i really wonder how many people know the end of it?

Source

"Jack of all trades, master of none, but better than a master of one."

The ending just shows that being good or being average at everything is sometimes better than being absolutely perfect at one single thing and sucking at everything else. I personally really like this one, because it tells me it's ok not to be perfect all the time and it's ok to not know everything about something...there is always time to learn more.

The last phrase i want to share with you and my favorite one is "great minds think alike".

Source

The full phrase is :

"Great minds think alike, but fools rarely differ."

This just goes to show that sometimes adherence or agreement is not always a good thing, and just because two or more people agree or have the same idea doesn't mean it's a good one.

I don't really have sources to give, the internet is big, but i will tell you that this post was inspired by something i read a while ago and i just wanted to share it with you.

Wow, you've actually done a great job by shedding more lights to those uncompleted phrases which probably most people never know what they fully means.
The fully explanation you've given will also make people like me and others to give special attention to the completion of other phrases like this.. Great job
