The Thieves Of Words - Snark's Dungeon Master Fantasy Stash

in #writing7 years ago (edited)

The Sages' Library is a place where knowledge is preserved, spread, and celebrated - but its librarians have recently made a weird discovery.

Someone has been creeping about the Library at night, cutting words from the pages of books.

The culprit, of course, has to be stopped - and that's where your players come in.

The Headmaster has offered them a choice of rare tomes as a reward for finding this thief of words - something that is, as it turns out, easier said than done.

After a cleverly set up stakeout and trap (or a lucky Perception roll - who knows?), the players find out that the word thieves are a gang of tiny faeries. They sneak into the Library from who-knows-where, search through books until they find the specific word they're looking for, and cut it out with tiny - but very sharp! - knives.

Naturally, the tiny creatures bolt the moment they are discovered - and, as the players quickly find out for themselves, faeries are notoriously difficult to capture.

The books whose words have been cut out, on the other hand, are much easier to find - even in a library chock-full of them.

Who are these faeries? Why they do they steal words? Are they trying to write something, word by stolen word?

That's for you to decide, and for your players to find out!

Seems like a fantastic idea for a one or two session activity that could easily lead to more quests involving the faeries and sage.

Thank you for reading. Let me know if you happen to use it in a game!

They don't steal the words, they free them, because words are magic and so are they :)

Now that's an interesting take! Why do they free specific words, however? How do they choose them?

Hmmm... Good question. Maybe it's not in the words themselves, but in the connections between them the magic lies... ;)
