YouTube star Philip DeFranco is leaving YouTube and why that is good news for Steemit.com

YouTube stars are leaving YouTube in droves and that is good news for Steemit.com.

<div style="position:relative;height:0;padding-bottom:47.62%"><iframe src="

" style="position:absolute;width:100%;height:100%;left:0" width="756" height="360" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>

The latest YouTube star to leave YouTube is Philip DeFranco.

Haven't heard of him?

Check out his channel here:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClFSU9_bUb4Rc6OYfTt5SPw

He currently has a channel on YouTube where he hosts "The Philip DeFranco Show". His videos routinely get millions of views and he is regarded as one of the most popular YouTube personalities out there.

Apparently that is all about to change...

DeFranco has been upset for some time about the way YouTube keeps changing their monetization practices. In particular, DeFranco is upset over the recent changes revolving around the use of "colorful langue" and controversial topics.

DeFranco is known for using quite a bit of "colorful langue" in his videos and pretty much every topic that he covers is controversial. He believes that YouTube demonitizing videos for their use of langue or anything else they feel is not "advertiser friendly" is a major form of censorship...

What is that you say?

People are leaving YouTube because they feel they are being censored?!

That is where Steemit.com comes in...

Currently Steemit.com is completely censorship free. DeFranco is free to cover any topic he wants and use whatever language or colorful metaphors he fancies and Steemit.com will never penalize him for it.

There are no advertisers that Steemit.com is trying to please. You are free to say what you want and how you want to say it.

YouTube is facing a major problem because it is trying to appeal to advertisers in that they are demonitizing anything that they feel is not "advertiser friendly".

This in turn is driving many of it's content creators away...

Where do they go from here?

Unfortunately for us, Philip DeFranco already has another video hosting platform he is planning on going to, his own.

That's right, Philip DeFranco will be launching his own independent media channel, "DeFranco Elite". The new platform is being funded through patreon with support from his fans.

However, just because Steemit.com can't snag Philip DeFranco, doesn't mean it can't snag a few of the many many others that YouTube is currently running off. We as a community will be ready to welcome them with open arms when they eventually find their way here.

Regarding Philip DeFranco, why don't you reconsider and give Steemit.com a try? Who knows, you might like it and stay awhile. :)

Sort:

YouTube made it easy to earn.

Steemit is missing 2 things I think;
Video hosting
And easy payouts

Video hosting can be sorted more easily than payouts.
Put yourself in the position of someone who knows nothing about Steem, Bitcoin, exchanges etc.
Thats a huge barrier for many people, how do they get their earnings out quick and easy?

If and when you'll earn $1000 on steemit you' ll find out how to cash out in five minutes, believe me.

If and when you'll earn $1000 on steemit you' ll find out how to cash out in five minutes, believe me.

That's the whole point! i've been telling people how great Steemit is and there's always the "I dont know how to use it".

From now on i'll quoting your awesome line.

I agree that you will have the motivation to learn!

I fear you may be over-estimating the will of many people. This is the age of instant gratification and people want easy.

If your going to ask me, I can cash that out in 5 minutes or less. :)

nope..not that I want to but I've earned half that just tonight.

best post I've seen all day haha

Yea the video hosting is a big one and I think that is coming at some point...

I agree, we will need to get a way to convert Steem directly to someone's local currency at some point. Either that or get a lot more merchants accepting steem as a form of payment. I am not sure which one is more likely at this point, but hopefully one of those comes in the near future.

I think we are going to see an explosion in virtual currencies over the next year. Both in adoption and price.

Brick and mortar stores are where the majority of people still purchase their groceries, and I think they would be weary of accepting payment in something whose value varies wildly.

I agree on the explosion! With little to no investment in virtual currencies I have some serious FOMO!

I think to offer video streaming and other bandwidth intensive services it's necessary to have access to a decentralized storage system. For example one day the SAFE network ( https://maidsafe.net/ ) could become that solution (I think there are some other systems with that purpose in development, SAFE is just the one I personally like the most ;) ).

Interesting times we live in, I would like to learn more on the SAFE network, will be reading up on that soon.

I think it is only important for steemit to support thumbnailing other video platforms like vid.me - Barriors to switch are low. Soon alot of human under 40 will have a Bitcoin account etc. So they will fastly figure out how to trade STEEM.

Do you really think that a lot of people will have Bitcoin wallets?

I am not so sure, but hope you are right!

Payout is dirt simple. Not sure how it could be less complex.

Payout to a bank account that you can use to pay bills from?

YouTube/Adsense pay directly into a bank account, automatically. Majority of people have bank accounts, so thats simple.

Most people dont know about bitcoin and exchanges etc.

I think it may be simple for you because have a background in technology, but for someone who does woodworking videos, or sewing or up-cycling videos, that stuff is as confusing as hell.

For me, it would be simpler if there was a more direct route from Steem to fiat.

Oh I agree with you on this. I in no way wanted to insinuate that there is no room for improvement. What you suggest would be super awesome actually! Then it would be easy to turn all types of crypto into fiat. That would be super crazy good.

It would be amazeballs!

Steemit just has to make shure that the platform can scale rapidly when Facebook and Twitter is loosing traffic.

Supporting that much traffic is a hard thing to do, no doubt about that.

Just happened to post about these YouTube issues again as well today. YouTube did this to our channel years back just as we were on the verge of breaking 100,000 subscribers. It got so bad we basically gave up posting new content on our channel. If you're "in with the in-crowd", though, you can post just about any darn perverse thing you'd like...

Link: YouTube CEO: Don't interrupt me with your microaggressions!

Was that the reason you came to Steemit?

From my "introduce yourself" post a few months back:

And remember this was back in 2011. We've been searching for the ideal next generation "censorship-resistant" platform ever since. In the past year alone, the censorship and banning of "dissenting opinions" is worse than ever not just on YouTube, but across all major social media. And even reaching your own subscribers has become more difficult than ever. Which, of course, gives steemit an even greater opportunity to really hit it out of the park.

steemit (especially with upcoming busy.org), while still constantly improving, excited me as the first alternative to address censorship and monetization in an entirely new and unique way that may finally be able to compete with these entrenched far-left-leaning centralized mainstream behemoths. It even inspired me to once again test the waters, do a bit of posting, and dip my toes back in the game.

If we can figure out the best way to adequately monetize content on a more continual basis, I think YouTube may be in for some serious trouble...

That's fantastic, hopefully this platform can become what you hoped it to be!

On the subject of YouTube's management "failings", if this doesn't even further make the point, while they're busy "dealing" with users that don't quite suit their "agenda"...

Last month, YouTube lost 5 percent of its top advertisers in the US and Canada following a global uproar over its placement of ads from big companies alongside videos created by neo-Nazis and ISIS supporters.

Speaking at the YouTube Brandcast event for advertisers on Thursday, YouTube boss Susan Wojcicki said, “We apologize for letting some of you down. We [like] can, and we will, [like] do better.”

NYPost Link: YouTube loses major advertisers over offensive content

Should take this chance to reach out to these YouTubers. If enough of us send emails they will take a look at Steemit. Some already have seen it and I have personally emailed some..

Great thoughts. Just getting the Steemit name in front of them is huge... even if they don't sign up right away. Putting it on their radar helps!

I 100% agree that this is a perfect time to showcase the benefits of Steem.

Unfortunately, our infrastructure isn't quite there yet. Can you imagine the waiting list filling up with 10,000 people overnight?

That said, I encourage everyone to continue and concentrate their outreach. We're working as fast as we can to make everything ready for a big push.

Great points! Hopefully we can get the sign up issues sorted out ASAP so we can take advantage of some of these changes with youtube as well as all the interest surrounding virtual currencies in general right now. It seems like this is the time to strike while the iron is hot! :)

No kidding, the whole space is exploding! What a great time to be in crypto. :)

I've left many comments to people I follow on Y-Tube encouraging them to give Steemit a shot... No takers yet!

Well as long as they know about it, that is half the battle. At some point down the road they may take a look at it and join on their own... Just getting Steemit in front of people is huge.

Good point - so many youtube are not satisfied with the monetization and censorship! If they'd all switch over to Steemit and bring their followers, that'd be amazing!

Yes it would!

I didn't even knew about Defranco. I watch the trending page of Youtube every day for around a year now and Defranco was one of the very few interesting people making it regularly to the top page. Same for h3h3, he's one of the very few interesting people hitting the trending page. Thank you for sharing this. Steem is taking off and even though we already had a ton of fun it's only the beginning.

Yep, I think you are right! I think a lot of people are taking a look at virtual currencies right now because of all the new money entering the space. In doing so they are going to stumble upon little ol Steemit.com... :)

When people are desperate enough they will find a new path.

And we will be here to welcome them :)

Flagging is very much similar to demonetization.

A very important point my friend @jrcornel. For awhile I have thought that because there are so many children on Steemit and I know we have posters who are as young as nine years old, there are some things we should not put up because it is not appropriate for children to see this. The NSFW tag takes care of this and so we can be censorship free. There should be other such tags, say, TFL, the foul language tag where people talk like carpenters or truckers
