I'm not so sure this will take off, is there really a big market for this? Can't people just call for free using Whatsapp or FaceTime?
You do have a good point, but I think the new feature that this offers is that you can do calls that would normally be expensive on many VOIP options for a very low fee. Options like Skype, WhatsApp, FaceTime, etc. work very well when on wifi and have a good following accordingly for their ease of use. When off wifi however, they default to using mobile data which is either unavailable (most likely if you are traveling and thus cannot use your regular phone plan) or can be expensive, especially with video calling.
I believe the idea of Ziber is to use other user's phone plans to route the call through, meaning that the connection to their device would be a lot shorter distance and thus not incur as much of a fee. Ex. You are in the US and call someone in France by connecting to a device that has unlimited international calling. I will look into it further, but that is my initial impression.
I get it but I just think a lot of people would seek out WIFI to make the call for free and with less hassle. Also things are changing, on my network we now have "feel at home" which allows us to use all our minutes, texts and data in about 30 different countries at no extra cost and the EU is getting rid of roaming charges. There may be times when Ziber would be useful but I just don't think the mass market would ever need it.
Thank you for sharing.
Trollbox is life! RIP trollbox! I'm going to look into ziber.
Looks like Ziber will have masternodes; I couldn't find how much tokens were needed to run one. This could be really cool I think - especially because there isn't any real competition when it comes to Skype. A user hosted solution with financial incentives could be a good competitor.
You need 10,000 ETH minimum, they say it's for stability. It is unclear to me if those nodes are actually routing VoIP traffic or calls.
I think this is a good idea. For someone like me in South Africa having to pay almost US$1 equivalent per minute for an international call it will be a wonderful alternative.
Definitely going to invest in Ziber. Thanks @Crypt0 for the info. It is a nice way to stay up to date in times where I am too busy to read everything online.
Does anyone have any information about the Ziber hack?
I cannot seem to find any response from Ziber team. The only conclusion I can draw from all this is that they stole all the ICO money.
Going to the etherscan.io and looking at the original ICO address: 0xf0a924661b0263e5ce12756d07f45b8668c53380 it seems like there is only 37 Eth.
Looking at the new wallet address: 0xab98922ca2be48214539c7d5dc63a343d14d7227 there is only 8.7Eth.
That really great man Ziber today i know something new from your post keep sharing :)
