Grower + Show'er | LED Lighting for Plants

in #cannabis8 years ago (edited)

Hi steemit!

Any fellow cultivators out there? Excited to share and contribute to the community. Let the good times roll... up a fatty!

I'm looking forward to chatting about different mediums, strains, nutrients, all things "grow" and especially lighting. I've been really intrigued with chip on board (COB) LEDs lately. This new technology of true full spectrum lighting seems to be convincing a lot of new and/or micro growers to make the switch, and in some cases, be the deciding factor to start their own garden.

Combining different spectrums by incorporating COBs and specific diodes to get that UV, IR or any other nanometer (nm), to play into the phenotypic expression of a specific plant has peaked my interest. We always hear growers talk about environment, and I've found that to be crucial, not just the atmosphere the plants are in but also the environment of the canopy, and medium.

I've noticed that operating exclusively with LEDs completely removes the need for more ducting and air flow, compared to HPS or other traditional bulb. This reduces the overall wattage requirement to run your lights and produce those photons for the plant to absorb.

This is much more valuable to a home grower, since they're now able to "spend" the wattage elsewhere. All of a sudden there's more options, to increase  efficiency and offset the overall cost of their garden. Not to mention the ability to operate the lights and a lower height and closer to the canopy.

Let me know you thoughts!

Cheers!

i think LEDs are missing the healthy infared radiation that aids in mihtocontrial function....

my uncle grew weed with LEDs. but they were like crack plants

LEDs work great it's just with the full spectrum or rather Fuller Spectrum than conventional lights with more of a Red Spectrum there's less girth if you will but way more trichomes and terpenes and everything else that's great it's just that with all the other spectrums the Red Spectrum just not the main one which causes Bud growth but you get away more tastier and complex bud

more red equals more terpenes. great for taking the bud sublingually using a good CBD strain

Our kind xl 750 has a nice uv/ir spectrum to it. Its just when you compare the spectrums of the LED lights compared to HID lights or conventionally used lights with ballast will find that they have a one-dimensional type of spectrum either mostly red or red with little bit of blue the LEDs have way more Spectrum to than those lights now if you were to make an argument about the sun vs LEDs or these conventional lights I agree with you but LEDs have less heat to them and Fuller spectrum they even make one that damn near mimics the Sun's Spectrum it's getting kind of late I'm tired but if you want show some research a literature I'll look into it what you post and I can post stuff tomorrow when I got energy to do research on this like I've already done

i actually should have put a question mark after the terpenes comment. i do not know, all i know is the terpenes are good for ingesting when using cannabinoids to help heal the body. i wouldnt mind you do the research. i know someone who is trying to grow good weed and the info could be helpful

sorry about that yeah I'm using text to speech so I can come off weird as well. LED lights just have more Spectrum and less Heat leading to more terpenes and try comes the problem is is that the buds can take a little longer to finish and most people are used to bigger bud with conventional lights over LED you won't be disappointed with a kind light or a black dog light

What kind of LEDs did your uncle use? What wattage were the diodes? Did he use top bin COBs?

There are LED panels that have IR diodes as well as UV. That source in your post is also 5 years old, and isn't a legitimate case study.

I respectfully disagree with you.

Seeing the difference between the "blurple" LEDs, which are just blues and reds mixed, compared to a full spectrum (390nm-710nm) panel, definitely have me convinced there's a huge difference.

Also LEDs have grown great weed for us for the past year has been awesome lots of people claim to get even better yields with LEDs but that's with like top-of-the-line black dogs

Glad to be here! Thanks.

Nice looking plants! There is something I find very pleasing about cannabis plants :)

I'm using a mix of alfalfa and rabbit manure compost as my growing medium and I also did use some LED lights to get the plants through winter in the greenhouse.

Sounds very organic! Are you able to monitor and regulate the pH of the soil? If you haven't already, I'd recommend checking out "Super Soil".

I remember the first grow I did, was purely fertilizer with lots of chicken manure and it fried my plants. However living soil can be one of the best ways to grow plants - especially cannabis.

Do you add perlite, coco or any other medium to lighten up the soil and promote a more porous and oxygenated environment?

Cheers!

I haven't tried to get into the soils specifics yet, I'm more of a Masanobu Fukuoka style gardener. I make sure they have water and love, but short of any obvious signs of distress I leave them alone to grow how they like in the soil they end up in.

Chicken fertilizer is a bit too powerful for plants to get in large quantity, the rabbit manure I have composted is one of the few options that plants can grow directly in which is one of my reasons for attempting to raise them in the first place :)

I have used some mineral supplements in the past that are now doubt in the soil still, but other than that it's purely the rabbit pellet & Alfalfa hay compost they're growing in mixed with maybe 15% regular dirt that randomly gets in there.

No-till Korean Natural Farming that Masanobu Fukuoka pioneered is becoming more and more practiced in the cannabis industry.

I'd like to give it a try at some point. It's my understanding that flushing isn't required with KNF or no-till. Has this been your experience as well?

How would I flush it without taking the root ball out of the soil? I don't think it's necessary with plants that are growing in compost, I haven't gotten to that part of my experiment yet so I haven't done more than casual research into the specifics of this part of the process yet.

When you say Masanobu Fukuoka do you mean master cho?

Knf is more of a foilar program / soil conditioning. The inputs are mainly used or widely used by food growers as a foilar program as well as creating the imo process. Indigenous Microorganisms is the main part of it all. IMO 1-5. In the Cannabis World however there's lots of people experimenting and doing all sorts of wild stuff with great results. You shouldn't have to flush anything out if you have a fully functioning an operating soil food web in your no-till container usually 15 gallons or larger or straight up in the ground if outside. You typically want to stop spraying your plants after week 2. Have you checked out Chris Trump YouTube videos on Korean natural farming at all? Great videos be careful not to miss any small key details and to follow the instructions all the way if you ever want to play around with Korean natural farming. The cgnf hawaii website is also a great reference point
