Deeper into cryptopossibilities: Art on Makersplace

in #cryptocurrency6 years ago (edited)

What blockchain-based, decentralised applications allows, keeps fascinating me but I also often end up in front of concepts that I must admit having a hard time to grasp.

So when a few months ago, Makersplace proposed me to take part of their project, it took me a while to figure out how buying a unique digital file is possible or simply, why is this even interesting to anyone? (my concerns being mostly like: should people get a printable file? What if then they start print them and sell them? Well, artistic copyrights concerns). They kindly explained me how it is more comparable to a collectible card (like football cards or so) but I am neither a card collector, so I was still a bit in the fog! :D

Anyway I am curious so I eventually registered and uploaded enough images to be in the first featured artists.

It came particulary abstract to me when about to set a price and a number of editions. So, at the moment I am trying various combinations.

In any case, it is nice to see that some fellow Steemians like @twirble, @sanderjansenart, @svdsdragunov and @reinhard-schmid (probably others?) are onboard.
Thanks to them for making posts, they are bringing bits of light to my nooby head.

If you don't know Makersplace, here's their "About" section.

"MakersPlace is a platform that empowers digital creators (artists, designers, writers and more) to create and sell their unique digital creations with the help of the Ethereum blockchain. For the first time ever, creators are able to sign and set a limited supply on their work, providing verifiable proof of authenticity, ownership and scarcity on the blockchain. In doing so, creators are able to better capture the full underlying value of their digital work.

We're a passionate group of veteran technologists and creators with decades of experience building consumer products, based in San Francisco, California. We've seen first hand the inequality in the immense value created and what's actually captured by digital content creators and are looking to change that.

We're currently invite-only. If you're interested in joining, send us your email address on our homepage and we'll get in touch. You can also contact us on our Discord channel."

While indeed the team is responsive and I can see new features (like the credit card linked with Stripe) regularly appearing, there is still to me, some important elements missing:

  • A preview/test view to see well how it'll exactly look like once published (and cropped). They said it's inherent to Blockchain to not be able to modify, which it is true but if Steemit has a way to edit, then I hope there might be a way to implement that too.

  • Fields to include external links from the profile and from the image themselves (to provide more info about it). I think it is, however, planned to come at some point.

  • It'd be also great to be able to arrange the order of the images.

Except that or if I forgot other complains, I am rather enthusiastic about Makersplace and looking forward for its development!

I think its all very new and probably most artists share your concerns and problems. Pricing is all a guess, until sales start picking up. Only when someone has actually spent the money, it will confirm a value...

Reminds me a bit of Internet in the early 90s :-)

Thanks for answering @reinhard-schmid! Hehe, good to see most of us are bewildered by the price thing.

You mean it reminds you old internet because of the experimental side? Or the sharing idea?

I only had it from 2001 or something, don't know anymore but you're right!

At the same time we're now in Web 3.0, I just installed Brave Browser and looking forward for the possibilities!

Oh I got asked to be on this as well and uploaded around 9 pieces. I hadn't a clue what to price things at or how many of the limited number to offer, so I did some of my 'oil' images at I think only 5 total and my black and white at 10 or 15 can't remember. And pricing, gee I just saw a couple other's had priced at .25 Ethereum, so that's what I did.

I still haven't blogged about it here yet, as I just heard back that I think they are getting my things up now?

Anyway, congrats and I need to sit down and buy a piece from my favourite steemian artists soon. October is only one day in and the business is piling up already!

These are all amzing but number two is making my heart pitter pat :)

Yeah that pricing seems to puzzle us all :D

Did you get your pieces up?

Number 2 is one of the latest! Good choice .)

🤔 hmmm interesting!
I remember receiving an invite from some crypto-art site a couple of weeks ago...not sure if it was this one...I was too busy to pay attention at that momment...I'm not as great artist as you guys but I would indeed like to try that new platform too!

yeah I have been aware of a few crypto and art projects but somehow I got into this one. I must say that invitations from developers is nice :)

I've never used the site you mentioned but I think the idea of being able to own digital works with the help of the blockchain is very important. When you buy digital things on most web stores, it's actually just like leasing the products. If the site ever decides to shut down the site, you lose access to everything you "own" on that site.

If Steam, for example, ever went out of business, millions of people would lose access to all of their games that they've bought there. That thought is deeply concerning to me.

There is a way for certain games that you buy VIA Steam to be both on GOG and Steam, but it's very few. There are actually a few games that I've mistakenly bought on both Steam and GOG because they were on sale and I forgot that I had bought them. What would be nicer is if they just interfaced with a blockchain and I could download the games I bought from either, if they have them.

I had never thought indeed about what you say with like Steam or simply most digital files coming from centralised platforms etc... totally makes sense to implement blockchain for that.

Thanks @geekpowered!

Yes after making a post about it Makersplace contacted me that I wasn't live yet and have to do some extra steps and add more pieces. Didn't find the time yet but hope to do very soon. Didn't put my post down as I don't think people go mad ordering. I really hope it will be a success and I think I will purchase/collect some of yours as soon as I made some profit I could use to do so :) I'm a crypto noob so I don't even know how to without earning some myself.

Interesting, they contacted you after a post!

Totally a crypto noob myself too but I am getting enthusiastic about these new stuffs :)

Yeah I felt special lol :D

Me too it's hard to keep up but I try to go with it hoping it will create more possibilities for artists. Are you also on whaleshares?

I just got there myself, @haedre :) all of these newfangled methods and channels ! i can hardly keep up !

haha great to see I am not alone being overwehlmed with all of that :D

I saw this site, and had all the same questions and concerns you have...my first thought was "wait..wut?" that was also my second thought and my though now.
If they could code it in some way that you could print it out but only a certain amount of times, that would make more sense to me. I say "to me" since this all might already make perfect sense to someone else.

Haha yeah definitely another weird blockchain children :D

But like said, they were friendly and inviting, so I just though to try it.

No idea if that kind of option about the limited printed copies would anyhow be possible soon or in any far future :D

Hi @haedre, I notice that your autovotes, even on your own posts, are still set at 0 or 1 minutes from posting. The new HF20 rules mean that your curation rewards now go back into the pool, as will some of the rewards from later upvotes. You may wish to adjust your timings to 15 minutes, especially for yourself - other upvotes can be set to somewhere between 12-15 minutes. Thanks.

hi @accelerator, hey thanks for notifying me. I had no idea of this and still don't get the thing with the rewards going back to the pool!

I even understand less why is this worse affecting my own posts.

Do you happen to have any good article/post explaining this, in a noobish, understandable language?

Changed it now.

Thanks again.

In the past, early voters (before 30 mins, now that has also changed to 15 mins) sacrificed some of their curation rewards - those went to the author, so some people didn't mind and voted that way as some extra author payout. However, now such lost curation rewards just go back into the general reward pool, so benefits neither the author nor later voters.

I wrote two short articles, the latter one is here.

For self-votes, if you vote after 15 minutes you will also get some curation rewards, just like any other voter; if you upvote before 15 minutes then, as I sad above, any curation rewards go to the general pool.
