My longest cycling event on my new Garmin Vivoactive 4

in #exercise24 days ago

This is meant more as a joke than anything else because I realize that this is not a long distance by any means. However, when you first start out with your new sport smartwatch it doesn't have any history to go by and funnily enough when I was first figuring out how to use the thing on the bicycle I hit a wrong button after just 100 meters or so and it congratulated me on my "best ride ever!" or something like that. I'm pretty sure I rode more than 100 meters on the very first bicycle ride I have ever done many years ago.

I am impressed with the accuracy of these stats though.

Before anyone tries to make fun of my top speed realize that this is a bicycle with only 1 gear. I intentionally chose this sort of bike because where I live is completely flat and there is also not much opportunity to go fast. Bicycles are not allowed on the highways in the city and the only place you really have that you wont be stopping constantly for traffic is the bike paths that have been installed. The problem there is that everyone is out cycling and considering the millions of people that live here, these bike paths really should be a lot wider than they are.

Cyclists have a reputation globally for riding like assholes and while I do my best to not be one of them, I would say that this reputation is definitely deserved. The complete absence of care that many of these folks have for anyone around them is pretty astounding. I am not maxing out at 20km/ hour. I could go a lot faster than that but with all the people around you are going to be putting yourself in serious danger of crashing.

There are some people on this trail with $6000 bikes and all the latest outfits and when I see that I feel like mostly these guys are probably the least talented people out here. This sort of gear is not at all necessary on the 2-lane bike path we have that weaves through the city and they are just making this dangerous. Seriously, if you want to utilize that gear to it's potential take it out of the city a bit. This isn't the Tour de France.

Anyway, it's frustrating but I am still happy to do it and really like the all the details that my Garmin watch gives me about my workout

I never knew that cycling burned this many calories but I suppose anything that keeps your heart rate up for a prolonged period of time is going to do precisely that now, isn't it? The thing for me is that aside from the dodging of the guys out there who brought 10 grand worth of gear with them, I enjoy this experience and don't really find it all that difficult. Maintaining a run for an hour is something I don't enjoy at all so perhaps this is going to become my primary form of cardio.

The estimated sweat loss? well there is no chance that is accurate for me and again, I have no idea how they come up with that number. I tend to sweat more than most people, I always have, so I would presume mine is twice that amount seeing as how I normally return to my house completely soaked from sweat. It used to annoy me sweating that much but now I have found that once I accept the fact that I am going to be dripping and completely saturated and get past that, I don't really mind. I don't want to stop and have a conversation as I am sweating profusely so in the rare instance that I see someone I know, I just keep moving.

So you could say that my opinion of this Garmin watch has completely reversed since the first few days. Now I really recommend it!
