What Happens To Electrolytes When We Workout?

You know that feeling of fatigue after really long and intense workout? Well that's your body telling you that it needs to be replenished of electrolytes. When we do an intense workout, we sweat, causing our bodies to lose electrolytes.

What Exactly Are Electrolytes?

Electrolytes are minerals present in our body that regulate fluids. Listed below are the the main electrolytes and short description of there functions.

  1. Sodium and Chloride- helps maintain blood pressure and supports muscle and nerve functions

  2. Calcium- aids in muscle contraction

  3. Magnesium- aids in healthy cell function

  4. Potassium and Phosphate- regulates energy

Drinks That Replenish Electrolytes

Just drinking water will not replenish electrolytes, so I would recommend either a traditional sports drink like Gatorade or the more natural alternative, coconut water. I personally either drink Coconut Water or Gatorade. Coconut Water is the natural alternative and is high in potassium, lower in calories and sugar and some varieties are even sugar and artificial sweetener free. A traditional Sports Drink like Gatorade have higher amounts of sodium and carbohydrates, which are also beneficial for you after a workout since you lose both.

When it comes to making a choice on Coconut Water or a traditional sports drinks like Gatorade, it all depends on how you feel and what your fitness goals are, since both are great for replenishing electrolytes.
