Doom (1993 PC game) : Kinda where it all began

in #gaming6 years ago

I know that there were many more first person shooter games that came before, but this is the first one that truly captivated myself and many other people at the time. A PC from the early 90's wouldn't run anything that we all do today on our phones, but it ran DOOM, and myself, like many others were absolutely transfixed by this title.

Althought most people are probably familiar with the story already, you play an unnamed space marine that finds himself fighting the hordes of hell for some reason. There is a story in there, but mostly at that time we were just concerned with the action and horror. The tense situations including being able to hear but not see your enemies (at times) was truly terrifying at the time.

look at those glorious pixels!

This game was so all-encompassing that it invaded my dreams and interfered with my studies. I would be in a boring lecture and then all of a sudden "snap back to reality" and realize i wasn't running down hallways that contain only 90 degree turns with a shotgun that I can reload alarmingly fast.

learning how to enter "God Mode" kind of ruined the game

Obviously, in the 20+ years since its release, graphical capabilities have improved dramatically and the later Doom Games are even more creepy. However, the novel aspect of being one of the first games of its type made Doom an absolutely monumental game of all time. It is largely considered to be one of the best and most influential games ever made. I had played Wolfenstein prior to this, but Doom just seemed so much more polished.

FPS games are a dime-a-dozen these days. There are so many of them that I don't really even bother playing most of the ones that are released. However, when Doom was brought out in the 90's if you were into gaming at all, you played it and loved it, it was as simple as that. This is where it all began and if you look at really any list that can be taken seriously they will all state that this was one of the most important titles for video games.... ever!

I for one believe that is very true. I know that most of you were probably not alive or were very young when this came out, but it was really something to witness. We barely had internet back in those days and Youtube was just an idea in a person's mind at that time. When you played DOOM, you figured it out on your own. You tried over and over and over again to complete the game-which by the way does not have a happy ending even when you win.

It was an absolutely perfect game that solidified ID Software as pioneers in the industry and many believe that this title alone may have been responsible for the popularizing of PC gaming.

Doom was such a great game. It offered so many innovative mechanics and the graphics were so good at that time. And I love the design of the enemies.

I can't wait to play the new Doom game, but I am still missing a PS4 ... I wanted to wait until they announce the new PS5 but I don't know if I can resist that long haha

according to insider rumors PS5 isn't coming out until Nov of 2020... maybe you should get one.

This game pretty much cemented my life long addiction to gaming. I still remember playing co-op over dial up with one of my friends back in the day. We used to use the level editors to make our own arena style maps and turn on infinite respawns and just go to town! When Quake came out it blew my mind. Having the ability to create structures you could walk under and over was pretty amazing as all of Dooms maps are based on a 2d map. Id software is the reason I dreamed of making games. Sadly the technology far outpaced my abilities so now I just enjoy playing them like mad!

i think i might be in the same camp as you. I have always liked video games since the Atari 2600, but I think Doom was the first game that I enjoyed so much that it was something I would dream about and would force me into daydreaming mid day about a level that I couldn't yet get past. haha

Same. I think the first video game system I played was either collecovision or intellivision. Atari was a bit after for me. But yeah Doom was what kicked off an addiction for sure.

I never really got into Doom or Wolfenstein. My first entry in to first person shooters was probably Quake or Quake II, so I was pretty late to the party relatively. I remember when Unreal came out and it was such a game changer because it was based on a totally new engine.

well Quake took the recipe and improved upon it, so you may have chosen a perfect time to enter the market. Doom was just so momentous to me because I had never seen anything like it before. If Quake was your first foray into the FPS world, you saw something even better than I did.

Reminds me of the first time I watched my kid brother play Resident Evil game. The jump scares made me stop watching after 5 minutes

yeah Resident Evil was pretty epic as well. I remember me and a friend of mine who was my copilot stayed up all night playing it. The spiders on the ceiling and the dogs that jumped through the windows were particularly heart-stopping :)

DOOM! This IS where it all began 😀 loved this so much. Did you ever watch the film with the rock? I didn't really like it too much, until it goes to first person shoot em up view and then it was awsome haha!

This game bring back to many memories :)

yeah, i didn't finish the Rock movie, nor have I played any Doom games since the original. I dunno why but FPS games don't really do it for me anymore.

Doom was outstanding in its time. We ( my friends and I) used to organize parties and design tournaments around it, even going so far as installing it on all the computers in our schools computer lab. Thanks for the nostalgia!

I can't really think of any game that I have ever played that were as captivating as DOOM was except for maybe the original Starcraft. What will the next innovation be? It is hard to imagine graphics being any better than they are already but the sky is the limit!

The fact that it was developed in the time when media publicity was absent is a testament to the fact that the game is really good, I for one didn't know about this game, infact never heard of it too, but the ways to know a good game is that aftermath effect it leaves on you.

you probably heard of / played / saw some of the many DOOM games and a film that came out since then. It was a pretty amazing time in gaming though because FPS was brand new back then.

I love this game. Yes, the graphics improved a lot over the years, but it is a great classic. A friend of mine learned a lot and build his own engine years later. Thanks for bringing back great memories.

There really weren't all that many first person shooters before Doom came along. The hardware of the time just wasn't up to it. Wolfenstein is the most well known predecessor and it came not long before.

I'm not really a huge fan of FPS games and have only played and liked a very few. The thing that made Doom a real standout for me at the time wasn't that it was an FPS necessarily, it was the ability to have a death match vs. other players and the ability to add new player created levels. I don't know that I ever finished the single player game but I probably spent more hours playing Doom (and Doom II) against other people that I've ever spent with any other game. It was the perfect game for my then brand new 486 DX2-66 that I bough right before going to college...

I've never actually played this game... we didn't have a Pc at that time. 🤷🏼‍♂️
