The Universe Laughs

A man tells a genie that he wants to be rich. The genie points his finger at the man and tells him, your wish is my command. The man looks at his hands and his feet, but he doesn’t feel any different. He takes out his wallet and looks in it, but it’s still empty. That’s strange, he thinks. Then he walks down the street to an ATM and checks his account balance--$1,000. What the fuck? he exclaims. Shortly after, a young woman passes him on the street and says, Hey, Rich. How have you been?

It’s an old theme, really, getting what we want but not in the form that we expect. For the past year, I have been losing weight slowly and steadily. Over that time, my body has become smaller and more toned. People no longer comment about how my stomach sticks out when they see me. My body no longer jiggles and shakes when I jump up and down. All of that feels great, but I have to admit, I don’t particularly like being and feeling smaller, and apparently neither does my wife.

Here I thought the “Dad Body” was a strange and passing fad fabricated to keep people from actually making changes to their lifestyle, but just last week, my wife put her arms around me and said, Yada. Which is the Japanese equivalent for I don’t like it.

Maybe the “Dad Body” actually was a legitimate phenomenon, and maybe it’s still preferred. I don’t know. What I do know is that I still have a little bit of weight to lose before I reach my goal, and I’m not going to stop pushing myself until my goal is met.

Last week, I weighed in one afternoon at 72.9 kg. Back in January, when I first began exercising, I weighed 82 kg exactly. Shortly after that, my weight rose up to 83.1 kg. Because of that second weight, part of me feels like I have already accomplished my goal of losing 10 kg. However, two things I have learned over the past year are 1. It’s better to finish strong and 2. It’s better to finish well past the finish line.

As a result, I want to get as close to 72.0 kg as I can, if not less, by January 4, 2019.

Sort:

I would take health as the more important aspect instead of the actual weight and size, good luck reaching the 72kg ! Only 0.9kg to go, that should be the easy part. Keeping it off afterwards once you reached your goal is often a far greater challenge.

The maximum I ever weighed myself was also around 82kg (I'm 1.72m) which was the moment I realised I needed a change. This was about 10 years ago. It took a really long time to get it fixed and I'm now very steady around 62-64 kg without having to do any kind of effort or much risk to relapse thanks to adopting a more healthy plant based diet. Still a lot of other aspect of my life that are in the process of fixing though.

Keep it up !

Yeah, it seems like you’re on the path of transformation too. That’s great!

When I hit 82 kg, I knew it was now or never. I’m very pleased with the weight I’m at now and a lot of the benefits that have come from it. Really, my problem was lack of exercise and overeating at dinner. My wife is one of those people who can eat and eat and eat and never gain weight, so it’s been very hard to get her to understand how little I need to eat.

Since I started exercising, she has come to see that in order to lose weight I need to eat a lot less than I was. Now she gives me smaller portions, and I’m losing weight at about 1 kg a month. Wherever that tapers off, I’m okay with it, but since I set a goal of 10 kg for this year, I can’t quite shake the drive to reach my goal no matter what. I think I can easily do so without threatening my health or going to extremes. As you said, only 900 or so grams to go. And then maintaining this new lifestyle.

Awesome man. Great work!
Funny you should mention the “dad bod” thing. Miyu said something similar recently. Don’t care! Wanna get more in shape!

That’s how I feel too. I guess a little more cushion feels better, and I can certainly understand how resting your head on a soft chest can feel nice (another complaint), but I’m getting in shape. No more saggy tits for this middle aged guy.

Honestly, though, I thought showing some abs might create a little excitement around the house. I didn’t expect to ge dissed for getting into shape:-)
