⚽LION WITHOUT A CROWN 👑👑👑

From 1960 since the first European Cup was held, before it was renamed with the name of the European Nations Cup, something was lacking. This seems to be a big question for many football lovers, including me from Southeast Asia, and Indonesia.

Big countries such as the Netherlands, Germany, France, England, Italy, and Spain are some of the countries that almost always fill the biggest tournaments in Europe. These countries are also always the center of attention of football observers, predictions of who will come out as champions are always decorated by these countries.

Spain and Germany became the most successful countries that won 3 times each, followed by Italy and France who won 2 times. Furthermore, the Netherlands, Portugal, Croatia, Denmark, Russia, Greece, and Slovakia managed to become champions 1 time each.

There is something a little strange and also I have always been looking forward to since 1996 when England hosted the edition of the European Cup. The new champion seemed to appear in the 10th edition of the European Cup at that time, where England was predicted to have a great chance because it had quality and also played at home.

The Three Lions at that time were reinforced by promising players, Alan Shearer and Teddy Sheringham were famous names in my country at that time. Not to mention that under the crossbar there are names of the class of David Seaman, tough defender Sol Campbell, Paul Gascoigne, Robbie Fowler, and several other names that strengthen other major English League clubs.

Defeating the Netherlands 4-1 in the last group match seemed to hint at the further journey of the English national team, until finally being able to go far until the semi-final party before being defeated by the German Panzer. Gone are the hopes of becoming the new champion for the Three Lions, history has again recorded results that are not in line with expectations.

Furthermore, the wait for England was getting closer when they were able to advance to the Finals again in 2020, they again subdued and became runners-up after being defeated by Italian troops with a penalty shootout. At that time they returned to their old home, not to mention the English league competition became a football mecca until now.

What is wrong with the misfortune of the Three Lions in the European Cup, even though the quality of their players and competition is extraordinary? Not to mention England being a huge football supporter base in Europe, and also a fairly long football tradition. Unfortunately, the Three Lions have participated 10 times, and without a champion title crown.

Whether or not this is called a curse, it will be interesting to wait until the end of this year's European Cup and see England break the curse and be crowned champions at the end of this year's 17th edition of the competition.

If that happens, then the Three Lions can be called as "The Lion who has the crown of Champions".

I loved that team from Euro ‘96 and fondly remember the game against Holland and Gazza’s goal against Scotland.

I watched a re-run of that Germany semi-final and still don’t know how we didn’t win.

For now though, our problem is a tactically inept manager. We’ve been lucky so far but I can’t see us winning it with the current manager.

Yes, for now, the manager is a problem for the English team, even some of the previous names.

I see him as a manager who often makes mistakes in choosing the composition of players, even in some matches placing players in positions that should not be.

Relying too much on a few players, Southgate does not have a balanced team. But this is just my opinion.

For me, the 2006-2016 era was a pretty good period for England to go far in every tournament. But unfortunately, their potential is wasted, the most visible weakness is the selection of managers.

Eddie Howe deserves a try, if only Southgate had been sacked.

England produce a great team a decade back when there was Rio, Rooney, Lampard, Gerrard, Beckham, Ashley brothers and still failed in EURO and World Cup.

New generation also had much impact for their club. But no hope to be a champion. Hope they can turn thing to their side.
