Entrance examination worksheet: Evaluation technique for new secondary school intake.
Has it ever bothered you as a teacher or parent why you have weak or pupils/students that have low grades in your subject as a subject teacher?
Well if it hasn't, then I want to invite you to the discourse so that together we can proffer a strategy that can help address this challenge in the educational sector.
I couldn't withhold my emotions while listened to an English Teacher colleague of mine in the school I'm teaching , narrate story of her challenge in class with the pupils.
The truth is that though this is not a religious post, the Scripture asks a kinda rhetorical question thus"what can the righteous build if the foundation is destroyed?" If I would want to unravel the educational myth about the above Bible verse, then I would paraphrase it thus that "**_What can a teacher build upon if the foundation of the ignorance is destroyed?
The truth is that as usual, when school resumes for a new team or session, there's bond to be an exodus or coming together of students and pupils.
Sequel to that, there is need to map out a strategy through Entrance Examination which would help know the abilities of the student or pupil that we are admitting into the school.
To ensure that the goal read is attainable, I constructed a simple comprehension worksheet that would seek to assess the students or pupils on the following areas:
1.Pronunciation
2.Reading Skill/Technique
3.Assimilation
4.Comportment
5.Fluency.
Note that each of the areas of interest attracts 20 marks each, am as such, the teachers should watch out to ensure that the aim or goal of the entrance exams is not forfeited.
ENTRANCE EXAMINATION 2019/2020 SESSION
CLASS: JSS 1 SUBJECT: English Studies DURATION: 30 minutes
Instruction: Answer all questions.
Section A: Comprehension (10 marks)
Instruction: Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.
There are different kinds of scientists. There are scientists who study how the stars move. There are those who are interested in agriculture and helping to find ways in which they grow trees. A scientist spends a lot of time in learning. He learns how to observe; looks carefully at what goes on around him. He learns how to experiment and write down his results.
Dr. Effiong studies and tries to develop different varieties of trees. He has developed a breadfruit which is four feet (1.2m) high above the ground. This variety is very different from the tall breadfruit trees that are usually seen on the farms.
Dr. Effiong works with the Forestry Development Investigation Branch of the Forestry Commission in Enugu. He developing a crop breeding programme in order to produce new and better types of some of our well-known trees such as breadfruit, pear trees, etc. Many of the new breeds bear more fruit and start producing earlier than the older ones we all know.
He has a farm where he plants, experiments, observes and writes down his findings. These findings are useful to the government, other scientists and the farmers alike.
