The Diary Game 28/07/24 – #50: "Highland Game" in St. Andrews
Today is Sunday and finally we have summery day because according the forecast it supposed to be sunny and warm till +19C which is here considered to be really hot for Scottish conditions. That is why we decided to do something outside, on Thursday I heard from my colleagues that there will be an event "Highland Game" in St. Andrews, Home of Golf but also very popular University city.
St. Andrews is small city with population of 16 thousand by 2011, it is an old city with many old buildings and architecture, as well as Cathedral . Majority of historical buildings belong to University and that is good because this is the way to maintain them.
St. Andrews also belong to the same county Fife and it is about 45 minute from us with car. We decided to take a car because this way we are more flexible, the road was through country side.
Once we arrived to St. Andrews, we park on one of the parking place that was on the side of Golf field, that is why for many visitors it was very exciting to be able to walk through that endless field. I have never walked here and was pleased that it was a chance today to do so. Still on one side of the golf field there was a game. Of course, the place only for members.
When we walked along we have seen that there is a preparation for the Women competition AIG Women's Open at St Andrews from 21-25 August 2024
*Here you can see that we are approaching the toward Highland Game field, because we were very early that is why there were not many people and that was good because later on it was very crowded.
When we approached that place it was about 11 AM and it was already a competition for girls who were performing a Highland sword dance. Usually the girls 7-10 years old but they all very excited and happy to be able to dance for the competition.
There are many family members who watch and cheer up their little girls.
The other activity is cycling and also throwing a metal ball, this competition has young children and teenager performing.
After we watched activities, we decided to do a round to look around what kind of stands are around, one of the popular one was seafood, because not often we have the opportunity of such variety just like that outside without going to restaurant.
Here are some souvenir shop so everyone can buy anything just as a memory of such event.
