Yes, let's talk about treating ourselves this is something that we often do. Of course, we can't treat serious problem and also we can not do surgery at home under "Youtube" instructions but we can treat minor stuff and avoid to put pressure on always full Emergency Department.
We all remember when we are children them our mother is the best doctor and nurse for us, she normally knows exactly what we have and what needs to be done and often she has right.
Slowly when we get older we have that experience from our mother and continue that too, some of us are good in that and another not really.
What I have in my house pharmacy? One of the commonest stuff is a remedy against dry cough, as you see on the first photo. Every winter at least once a winter someone in our family has cough, often it is enough to have such syrup for few days and usually eveyrhting is settling quickly.
I think in my situation it is different, as a doctor I usually do not need to search in Internet the symptoms but I know that my mother does it often, even before speaking to me. She already searches Internet for the symptoms and also has potential treatment, that she likes then to discuss with me. In many cases it is wrong what she found but she just likes to do that, maybe this is also something that she feel helps her to understand her symptoms.
I think much information in Internet is correct and also often we can find people who share their symptoms and also what they did and how they feel now. Maybe because this is then written in easy understandable way we often find such information useful. Maybe one of the reason because the people in Internet suffered from the illness and know what they are talking about, contrary doctors not always had such condition and even though we know about diseases from books and maybe from patients, we do not really know how that is felt in reality.
I think that is a reason why people prefer to search information in Internet and in forums.
Here is the question from @helengutier2:
I know that in many of our countries the health system is a bit deficient but you get used to self-medicating or whenever you feel any symptoms you go to the emergency room in your country.
If there is something simple and I know that it is safe to treat myself then understandably I will treat myself without going to hospital , but we all need to cautious and not to stay at home too long if we do not get better then we need to seek for help
Simple conditions, I definitely treat at home and I think we all should do that, if you want to know what kind of situations, here they are:
- Hay fever, usually happens every year and I know that I need some nasal spray and eye drops, so I buy them when it is time for hay fever
One of the commonest pain is migraine that is why this pain relief is always there in home pharmacy when we need something quickly we have everything at home.
This is something that everyone should have at home, any cuts or wounds then we need quick dressing so keep a pack of plaster at home.
I would like to invite @lusciouslucy, @maryemolinet and @jes88 to this contest
I have the feeling that there is a general tendency not to fix things yourself, but to have them fixed. This tendency also seems to carry over into the field when it comes to your own health. And then it's also the case that you're forced to steal a doctor's time just because you need a sick note for your employer.
Nevertheless, I believe that you can successfully treat many illnesses yourself. Which does not rule out asking a doctor for help.
You can imagine that often we see patient who come and already after searching in Internet have right in their guess of the diagnosis or treatment. I usually listen well to patients because they know their body better and everyone has their sixth sense. Of course, often it is exaggerated but them after listening, examination we have another chat and usually have nice plan either for investigation or treatment. But you are right often many small things can be fixed by ourselves. Of course, "sick note" is something that we need and nobody else can issue it, I believe many doctors know about that too.
Hi @rosselena, yes, that is true, I never thought this way when I was young and studies at University but now when we see how our parents and relatives get older and need advises and help it is noticeable that this is very useful to have medical background. Despite of that there is still time and topics that even us, medical people need to search a bit for refreshment.Unfortunately our human brain often stores the information that we do not use and often we can not have an easy access to it, but everything comes back once we start reading such information again either in books or Internet.
Thank you @o1eh for support :)
There are actually sometimes that due to the urgency of matters, you get somethings fixed yourself and that includes drugs. I see no harm actually in self medicating as not every time you will see the doctor at your side but you just must be careful the level of medications you prescribed to yourself
