The Diary Game 03/10/24: Completion of long working shifts
Hello my dear Steemians,
During last few days and including today I had my working shift, that is everyday had the same structure but still every day was different.
The similar staff was that every day started with 8 AM that I arrived to work, we never know how busy or how efficient our work will be but every day I am very positive and hope only for wonderful day. What is the start of your day when you come to work? For me I often make a cup of tea because we will have a handover and usually it then takes about half an hour and after that time we might not have next break until more than 6 hours or so.
What actually happen to me today when I made a strong black tea and wanted to get milk. The first box of milk but once I added it to tea I noticed that milk was spoiled. I thought, okay just try one and made another cup of tea, again waited until it is strong but when I took another box of milk and pour it it was spoiled too. After that I thought maybe it is my fate and I should not have tea thins morning so I just went to handover without strengthening myself.
During my 7 days work this floor was my main place of work. Our oncall time we spend covering acute admission, that means patients either need operation then it is Operating Theatre, often after that patient go to High Dependency Unit or Intensive Care both those departments are on 1st floor. Proximity of those departments is very important they are all on the same floor so that patients could be easily and quicker transferred from one unit to other.
The days could be different and often we have some operations that come more frequently then others.
This time we had quite few Appendectomies or removal of inflamed appendix. We often have Students and they usually ask what is my favourite surgery, I must say there are many but Removal of Appendix is one of my favourite one, although we never know for sure how inflamed appendix will be so often it takes from 30 minutes till 1,5 hour. These days all the patients were able to go home on next day.
We had few Students with us over those days and they are in their last year so it is not only our work but also teaching we do while going. Many students do not know who they want to be that is why we want to show them the best side of Surgical field some of them often return for the training later.
Our working office is further down along the corridor and we have no window in there. Therefore, after working hours we just go out to the main entrance and this is along this high windows. On sunny days it is great because you can just stay there and enjoy sun shine on your skin for some time.
At the end of the day it is a great feeling going back along the corridor home, that is my favourite part of the day and now when my 7 days of long shifts over I can really enjoy my day off.

A cup of strong tea or coffee to start the working people's day really gives them energy to work through the day. However, because the milk mixed in the two cups of tea you made was spoiled, you refrained from drinking strong tea in the morning, which is a really bad experience.
I respect your profession a lot. Because doctors help common people like us to cure diseases. And your favorite operation is to remove appendix which made my respect for you more. Because both my mother and father suffered from this disease. My father used to roll and scream in bed unable to bear the excruciating pain of appendicitis which really seemed like excruciating pain to us too. Later when my mother was also diagnosed with appendicitis. Then we quickly removed the mother's appendix through an operation. However, lately mom has been having stomach pains again so we are thinking of checking her appendix again.
I can imagine the environment as your office is down the corridor and has no windows. However, after being cooped up there all day, your holiday moments may also feel amazing when you get in touch with nature in the sun.
Thank you for reading, yes, such pain like your father had, it is no medication will help they only take an edge of pain. In the past in some countries appendix was removed as precaution but also in some military duty when soldiers are sent to remote area they also have appendix removed so that they do not have problem. But in general it is something that also plays a role of immune system so better to keep it so long it is not inflamed.
Yes, there really is no choice but to bear the pain until the appendix is removed. Before Dad's surgery, we used to give him a tablet called Viset to reduce his stomach pain. Finally, Dad got rid of that pain by having his appendix operated.
