SLC21/WK1: Empowering Life-Saving Skills: A Guide to First Response and Basic First Aid
Hello dear Steemians,
Having an experience in First Aid and because of the courses that I passed I wanted to share my experience about that too.
First Aid is very important and earlier or later we come across this situation.
I had once a case when I needed to provide the first aid. It was when I was in Edinburgh we were walking along the tourist street with friends, while passing by one restaurant I saw couple of people standing at the entrance to restaurant and overlooking a person on ground. I went to them, because I had First Aid training course. Coming closer I saw that the person on ground had seizures, it was a young woman and a waiter from restaurant told that she went out and sank on ground.
I told that I have experience in First Aid and approached a person:
first, I asked people to make a space and got a towel that waiter had folded and put under the head to protect head from any injuries while seizure.
I asked if Ambulance was phoned, but waiter already phoned an ambulance and they were on their way
with the help of waiter we turned a woman on side in recovery position
she was breathing, so we knew that her airway was clear
After couple of minutes seizures stopped and she started to come back to consciousness. She then was able to talk, although was quite confused. In next couple of minutes ambulance crew arrived by this time the woman was able to sit up and had some water. I handed over to ambulance what I witnessed and what was done so far, at this stage they took over and the woman was then taken to Hospital.
I think for the waiter who was first on scene, was a bit stressed maybe he did not have any experience that is why it is important to come for help if someone knows what to do in such situation.
Let's go step by step through the Motorcyclist case and also through the systemic review of proving the help.
When I went through “Basic Life Support” here in UK we had following letters: DRSABCD and I go through the letters with you.
“D” Assess the scene for Danger: if it is a road, that means you need to make sure that there is no danger to your as a first responder and to casualties. If possible you need to make the place so that other road users will not crash into the accident scene. Check if there any other danger: explosives, like petrol or gas leak, no high voltage electric cables were damaged and maybe they lying on road or any other danger.
“R” Response: The next step is to check if the casualty conscious or unconscious, tap on shoulder and ask if he can hear you and if he is all right. If there is no response, the person is unconscious.
In regards to our motorcyclist, bleeding from leg could something that might draw your attention, but if the person is not conscious and not breathing then he could die if you waste your time applying a bandage.
“S” means “Send for help”, you can ask anyone who is there to call for ambulance or if you are alone then you should call for ambulance before starting anything.
“A” that means Airway, we need to check if the motorcyclist has free airway, check for cervical spine injuries before removing helmet provided motorcyclist is wearing helmet. Also check if there is anything in a mouth, nose or throat that could cause mechanical blockage of airway.
“B” Breathing: again to make it easy to remember we had:
- Listen: you need to put you ear in front of the nose of casualty to listen to breath sounds
- Look: while you are with your ear at nose, your eyes will be overlooking the check of a person and you can see if his chest is raising or not, or if he is breathing or not
- Feel: while in this position, the mouth of the person will be at the level of your cheek that means if a person is breathing then you can feel warm air coming our of his mouth. Our skin on cheek is very sensitive and we can feel it better than with our hands
You spend just 10 seconds for that.
So if the motorcyclist has no breathing then we go to “C”
“C” or Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation or chest compression for that heel of one hand over heel of other hand in the middle of chest 30 times with the tempo of 100-120 per minute and without loosing a contact between the hands and chest, followed by two breath and continue either till ambulance crew arrives or till person starts breathing spontaneously
“D” in many countries there are Defibrillators available in Supermarkets, organisations, so if available send someone to get it and switch it on and follow instructions.
If motorcyclist after CPR started to breath then next you can deal with his wound. For any bleeding you can apply pressure using any clothes available, you also can use a belt above the wound as tourniquet to reduce blood loss and put person in recovery position.
Emergency Numbers in UK:
999 is the main Emergency number for any emergency like: police, ambulance, fire brigade, coastguard, cliff rescue, mountain rescue, cave rescue
101 it is non-emergency number for Police
111 is NHS number
112 is a number for Coastguard
I am sorry but I have no access to Google docs and I do not want to sign up for that, therefore, I do understand and accept that my homework will not be fully eligible as a participant.
I would ask you, the organisers to have an alternative way of checking the knowledge of users for future works if you would like more people to enter your Learning Challenge.
I would like to invite following users to the challenge @sahar78, @ishanto, @sheikhtuhin

General Feedback:
Your homework demonstrates a solid understanding of first aid principles and protocols, especially in your descriptions and explanations. While you've shown a grasp of key concepts, there's room for improvement in fulfilling all assignment requirements. Make sure to thoroughly read through the instructions to ensure you meet all criteria in future assignments. Keep pushing forward!
Thank you.
