Robot characters are important elements that add color to science fiction films and books. Although robots are notable for having superior abilities that humans don't have, their personality traits play an important role in their legends. Thanks to their unique personality, even though they are robots, they are loved and respected. In this context, artificial intelligence assistants, such as Siri, that have become quite competent, but still can not capture the expected popularity may be caused by not having a charming personality.

In this article, I will give examples of robot characters. The number of robots that have left traces of sci-fi enthusiasts is so much that I will only mention my favorite characters to keep the article in a readable volume.

Although the word "robot" is mentioned in the title, the characters I will mention do not necessarily have a body, artificial intelligence programs are also covered in this context. For example, HAL, one of the coolest creatures I encountered in any sci-fi film, was characterized by only a red light. He caused Dave a lot of trouble with his confident tone and calm attitude. On the other hand, it can be assumed that the hull of the spaceship is the body of HAL.

Star Wars' legendary duo R2-D2 and C-3PO comes first to my mind when it comes to a robot. Maybe because they're the first robots that have a personality I've ever met on the cinema scene. These robots, called droid in the Star Wars universe, also make children a fan of the movie series. Especially my son loved R2-D2. Despite its funny appearance and limited mobility, Artoo was respected his with courage and technical knowledge. It is admirable that a non-speaking character can be loved so much. In contrast to R2-D2, C-3PO protocol robot was a chatter and a coward. It was nice of him to walk with his hectic feet.

Another legend robot character I'd like to mention is Marvin, the depressed robot in The Hitchhiker's Galaxy Guide. Marvin, who claims to be 50,000 times smarter than an average human because his brain is the size of a planet, was going mad in the novel because of the simple tasks assigned to him. Because I have friends who could compete with him about pessimism, I found Marvin's depressive state particularly amusing.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator is another robot character I can't forget. The Terminator is the character that said one of the most memorable lines in the history of cinema: "I will be back". He showed us a lot in the film that he could be a true character. The Terminator was a determined and workable guy who didn't like to talk. "Less talk, more work" motto had found a body in the Terminator.

There is a thesis that the form of robots help humans to create empathy with them. WALL-E looked like a mini grader with binoculars on top of it and managed to draw attention to what many human-like robots could not do. He joined memorable robot characters with his enthusiastic, confused, naive attitude. For example, he performed brilliantly on the stage where he met the robot called Eva. And the stage in which he desperately tried to activate Eva was very touching.

Not all robots are sympathetic like WALL-E, of course. In the Matrix series Neo and his team's nightmare, Agent Smith was a guy with a pessimistic gaze, calm posture, superior fighting skills. It had the ability to replicate itself, he is the first to come to my mind among bad robots.

The last robot I want to mention is Roy Batty, the cold-blooded killer of the Blade Runner movie. He is the owner of the words “all those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.”

I thought when I was watching that rainy scene that 'conscious being is a conscious being, whether it is a murderer or a replica.'

Robot karakterler bilimkurgu film ve kitaplarına renk katan önemli öğelerden. Bu robotlar insanlarda olmayan üstün yeteneklere sahip oldukları için dikkat çekse de, efsaneleşmelerinde kişilik özellikleri önemli rol oynuyor. Her ne kadar robot da olsalar özgün bir kişiliğe sahip olmaları halinde daha çok seviliyor ve saygı görüyorlar. Bu bağlamda Siri gibi yapay zekalı asistanların, epeyce yetkin hale gelmiş olmalarına rağmen halen beklenen popülariteyi yakalamaması nötr bir kişiliğe sahip olmalarından kaynaklanıyor olabilir.

Bu yazıda ister istemez robot karakterlerden örnekler vereceğim ancak bilimkurgu meraklıları üzerinde iz bırakmış robotların sayısı o kadar fazla ki yazıyı okunabilir bir hacimde tutabilmek için sadece en çok beğendiğim karakterlere yer vereceğim.

Başlıkta "robot" sözcüğü geçmesine rağmen, sözünü edeceğim karakterlerin mutlaka bir bedene sahip olması gerekmiyor, yapay zekalı programları da bu kapsamda ele alıyorum. Örneğin herhangi bir bilimkurgu filminde karşılaştığım en cool varlıklardan biri olan HAL sadece kırmızı bir ışıkla karakterize ediliyordu. Güven yüklü ses tonu ve sakin tavırları ile Dave'e epey sorun yaratmıştı. Öte taraftan, uzay gemisinin gövdesinin HAL'in bedeni olduğu varsayılabilir.

Robot denince aklıma öncelikle Star Wars'ın efsane ikilisi R2-D2 ve C-3PO geliyor. Belki kendileri sinema sahnesinde karşılaştığım ilk kişilikli robotlar oldukları içindir. Star Wars evreninde droid olarak isimlendirilen bu robotlar çocukların film serisinin birer hayranı olmalarını da sağlıyorlar. Özellikle oğlum R2-D2'yu çok sevmişti. Komik görünüşü ve sınırlı hareket yeteneğine rağmen cesareti ve teknik bilgisiyle ortamlarda kendisini saydırmayı biliyordu R2-D2. Konuşmayan bir karakterin bu kadar çok sevilebilmesi takdire şayan bir durum. R2-D2'nun aksine geveze ve korkak olan protokol robotu C-3PO da partneri gibi insanı gülümsetiyordu. Telaşlı halleri ile bacaklarını sürüyerek yürümesi çok hoştu.

Sözünü etmek istediğim bir diğer efsane robot karakteri Otostopçu'nun Galaksi Rehberi'ndeki depresif robot Marvin. Beyni bir gezegen büyüklüğünde olduğu için ortalama bir insandan 50.000 kat daha zeki olduğunu ileri süren Marvin kendisine verilen basit bulduğu görevler nedeniyle romanda çılgına dönüyordu. Karamsarlık konusunda onunla yarışabilecek arkadaşlarım olduğu için Marvin'in depresif hallerini özellikle komik bulmuştum.

Sözüne sadık bir karakter oladuğunu filmde bize fazlasıyla göstermişti. Terminatör konuşmayı pek sevmeyen, kararlı ve işkolik bir dostumuzdu. Az laf, çok iş mottosu Terminatör'de vücut bulmuştu adeta.

2Robotların biçiminin insana benzemesi onlarla empati kurmayı kolaylaştırır' biçiminde bir tez var. Tepesine dürbün takılmış mini bir greydere benzeyen wall-e nice insan benzeri robotların yapamadığını yapıp dikkatleri üzerine çekmeyi başarmıştı. Telaşlı, şaşkın, naif halleri ve kararlılığı ile unutulmaz robot karakterler arasına katıldı. Gezegene canlılık olup olmadığını araştırmak için gelen "Eva" isimli robotla tanıştıkları sahnede muhteşem bir performans sergilemişti örneğin. Ayrıca "Eva"yı umutsuzca aktive etmeye çalıştığı sahne de çok dokunaklıydı.

Tüm robotlar wall-e gibi sempatik değil elbette. Matrix serisinde Neo ve ekibinin kabusu olan Agent Smith kötücül bakışları, sakin duruşu, üstün dövüş yetenekleri ve bir tanesiyle zor başa çıkılırken kendisini çoğaltabilmesi gibi özellikleriyle kötü robotlar denince ilk akla gelenlerden.

Sözünü etmek istediğim son robot ise Bıçak Sırtı filminin soğukkanlı katili Roy Batty. Filmde replikant olarak isimlendirilen bir anroid olan Roy Batty afili bir kavga sahnesinin ardından söylediği “All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.”(Tüm bu hatıralar yağmurdaki gözyaşları gibi zamanda kaybolacak. Ölme vakti) sözlerle "katil de olsa, replika da olsa bilinçli varlık bilinçli varlıktır" dedirtmişti.
