Sharing Society Update & Lake County - Solving Homelessness in Northern California

10 Days ago I wrote about this small city in North California with the highest per capita homelessness in the country. Not too far away (in fact barely an hour) in the next county they're facing similar problems but working on different solutions than Ukiah at the moment.

What have we been doing: Handing out cards, helping some in need locally, meeting community representatives from various groups and waiting on the website platform. Did you know we're still in the 'Pre-Launch' phase? This just means that right now we're working on a web platform that is going to spur community support for those in need, making it easier to help and give. That's why our business cards read "Buy. Sell. Find. Trade. Help. Give" - Our goal is to build a decentralized community based 2nd hand exchange and what you could call 'charity' for those that really need it. Honestly, who needs usable clothes more, Goodwill to re-sell them, or a person without a home, living on the streets who has theirs worn down, stolen, or just plain filthy from the lifestyle society has imprisoned them in?

Our first step with the website NOW however will be a community calendar for us and the pilot area in North California. We expect at least the calendar to be ready within weeks and the website platform to be up in some fashion within the coming months.

What's Happening in North California
10 Days Ago I sent out the exciting news of Ukiah's Homeless Resource Center approval by the city planning commission. The last winter shelter closed the end of april. There was an appeal filed to the decision, though my guess is it won't affect the shelter, at the minimum the plans for the winter shelter to re-open November 1st, if you know more however please respond to this email.

Also be careful with reading the Ukiah Daily Journal online as after a certain number of articles they will want you to subscribe.

I think most of us have heard that Ukiah apparently has the highest per capita homelessness in the country. Not too far away (in fact barely an hour) in the next county they're facing similar problems but working on different solutions than Ukiah at the moment. "Project Restoration" has 16 different focus areas, modeling some after success in Yuba City where it's said 85% of those helped did not go back to being homeless.

The Normal Routine
We could really use volunteers to show the disadvantaged community that their city cares; anything you'd like to help out with, be creative. We are looking for someone to takeover the Saturday clothing drive (collecting donations, organizing and distributing to the homeless).
