Amazing Chilean Dance Music Stands Up for Sexual Minorities

in #music7 years ago

Hello everyone! Day 2 of sharing songs!

Today I'm introducing a song from one of my favorite artists currently, Alex Anwandter. The song, Cómo puedes vivir contigo mismo?, is off his second solo album and translates to How can you live with yourself?. It's an indie dance disco romp with - is that cowbell!?!? The music video was inspired by the 1990 documentary, Paris is Burning, that documented the voguing and ball cultures among gay and transgender communities in New York City. I have no doubt the dancers in Anwandter's video could hold their own with the best in NYC because they are fab-u-lous!

Como puedes vivir

Anwandter has spent his music career lobbying for the rights of sexual minorities in his socially conservative home country of Chile. Cómo puedes vivir contigo mismo? itself speaks directly to people who are critical of sexual minorities.

How can you live
How can you live
with yourself
I'm not wearing a costume
I'm not afraid of judgment

Anwandter has also taken on the rights of sexual minorities through film. In 2016, he premiered his first film, You'll Never Be Alone, inspired by the murder of a young gay man in Chile. Anwandter insists that the movie is not just about that episode, however.

"More kids have died from similar — albeit slightly less horrific — attacks since Daniel, yet no one knows their names. I tried to make a film “about them, for them,” not about Daniel Zamudio. And that’s the design of fictional narrative versus a biopic: it abstracts a specific event into an issue we can reflect upon, and the movie can function not as a message with a simple morale (as in “Don’t be a homophobe!”) but as a vehicle where people sit for a while and think upon these things."

Who are your favorite artists speaking up for the rights of sexual minorities? Who are your favorite dance artists? Know any artists who sound like Anwandter?

Looking forward to everyone's suggestions!
