I really applaud​ your attitude​ and thinking here! It's a step in the right direction, IMO...Become one with the cockerels :D
Anecdote: a part of what I did back in the day was to try and implement Walden but my and our attempts would always lead to failure as I was raised a dumb city boy! Now if the internet had ​existed​ in 79 I'm sure my attempts would have been more successful​! One winter, on one attempt up in the mountains off the grid it was so cold that the bloody cockerels froze​ to death! You might have been impressed with my homemade moccasins​, though:)
I don't have a lot of experience with gardening but Youtube is your girl in that regard. I did spend​ 4-years gardening in boxes on a roof quite successfully. I only have one pic though and that is ​my fish tank​ Pansie aquarium​ which ending up looking awesome by the fall. The plants grew for near 8-months in it:) Best tomatoes I've ever eaten, too:)
