Steve Wozniak says the Internet as we know it is about to end if network neutrality is rolled back

The loss of network neutrality could mean censorship at the packet level

Net neutrality is a longstanding digital principle that internet service providers should treat all web traffic equally and fairly. This means providers cannot prefer one website or service over the other by granting unequal loading speeds or by blocking or slowing content.

Steve Wozniak in my opinion makes a good point. Network Neutrality is important for reasons most people don't discuss. One of the reasons it is important is due to the fact that corporations can be pressured to censor anything from search results to throttling down activities or websites so that access to them is slower. For example suppose Steemit is on the list of sites which for some reason shareholders are against? The result could be that people trying to access steemit.com could face an "access delaying" slowdown.

Slowdown might not stop people from going to censored locations on the Internet but the it can discourage people from going to sites not preferred or authorized. This could mean that "fake news" sites could also be slowed down or "access delayed" by companies trying to protect their reputation in the United States. While the US government might not be able to put in place an Internet kill switch, the removal of network neutrality allows for bias at the pipe levels to discourage or encourage traffic to the sites the government (or the shareholders influenced by the government) prefers.

You might even have to pay extra to visit sites beyond a basic package which includes Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia, CNN etc. So you will be charged a premium to visit websites that are not in cahoots with big business and governmental interests.

Basically, we would be North Korea.

Exactly. Net neutrality ensure that all content providers are treaded equal by the underlying infrastructure.

How would the population respond if the private companies could pay have a lane one the freeway just for themselves, and potentially also block some trucks on the other lane?

Absolutely! Net neutrality is the last frontier where the biggest battle will take place between us and those who think themselves fit to rule. We need to realize the necessity of preserving our most important of rights. One of the last to remain. This is why we should all support or participate in these grass roots outfits springing up using blockchain tech to allow anonymity built into the very fabric of platforms like substratum! It is a fight we need to be more proactive about for sure.

so hot and good job

Great topic. Most people are totally unaware of this issue. Mass media is talking about kneeling orstanding for the national anthem. And most of America is entranced . Complete unaware that their freedom is in jeapordy. When I tell people about this they tell me that they had no idea. There must be greater awarness.

It's nice to see Wozniak take a stand on this issue. Between the political correct crowd and their dream of programing everyone according to their Utopia and dying old media, it's true that killing network neutrality may only prolong their collective agony.

They lost the battle of ideas a long time ago and now think (lol) that moving to the censorship side will permit them to salvage their destruction. They neglect the power of imagination and innovation to even understand what will come to bypass their hypothetical attempt at killing net neutrality.

EACH PACKET IS BORN EQUAL AND FIRST COME FIRST OUT.

for those who don't get it, it's that in the web the data is send in pieces called packets. Then at each switches there is a an order to get through, normally, rationally and efficiently for network growth it is based on time stamps, the first arrived will leave first and then the queues will get worked out this way.

However some may use the security arguments (like their data is more important) or the political censorship clownshow or to preserve my captive audience scam, to destroy network neutrality.

This is a critical issue, if AOL could have stopped google, or google facebook, or the msm netflix... all those were only possible because of net neutrality. Steem too by the way.

Very good point of view. I am against any censorship on the internet. This censorship is being used by governments to misinform and control populations

Just like mainstream media. They show whats convenient to their intrest. And when there is something really going on in the world , instead of the news they will show you how much implants Kim Kardashian stuffed in her ass.... there is a reason why they call it "TV program"...to program our heads and turn our attention from reality, simply to control us.
Well whats a definition of Government?
Govern-means control...
Ment- from latin means mind....A complete control and mind fuck. So they try it now with Internet...just a matter of time, but people are not stupid. There is always a way to get the info out there.

excellent point of view i follow you

God save the Queen!😱

Maybe MaidSafe can change that and steer us in the right direction.

Which layer of the OSI model are you talking about here?
