Good deeds are the ones that go unrecognized and unrewarded. The action itself should be the primary motivation, always. Eventually, it's just how you are, not any particular deliberate act.

I heard something similar about this recently, ugh I can't remember where though! Someone was talking about the countless people throughout the ages who just made things that worked and so no one ever even thought to thank them. You don't win a nobel prize for making a good car. You get more recognition for making something broken and then fixing it than you do for just making something that works from the beginning. I think some people just are that way. Biologically driven to make things of value even if no one wants to thank you for it. Monetary compensation is the consolation prize not the ideal prize.
Now, this was a good read! If only stuff like this was up in the front of every headline!
