I was Just Challenged to a Charity Game on Steemit... and probably won't win any friends with this response :)
Earlier today, I posted a video about being clear and honest with yourself about the purpose of your posts. Sometimes I post helpful content that's in demand and sometimes I post other things just for my own selfish pleasure. I guess this is more of a personal one but hopefully it helps others appreciate their daily contributions more too.
I was just challenged by @jennamarbles to participate in a new game she started. She outlined the rules as follows:
- Do a good deed!
- Tell us about it on STEEMIT use hashtag #heartgoodnesschallenge.
- Send your video challenge to any three users.
- Within 24 hours they will have to do the same. If they refuse to do so, they will have to transfer 10% of the total amount of their wallet to account @steemit.
To be honest, my first thought was "how is it that someone thinks they can impose terms and conditions on me without my consent?" I'll try to overlook that though because I want to give this nice young lady the benefit of the doubt. I'm assuming she means well.
As far as I'm concerned, a good deed is any action that provides positive value to others. I already do between fifty and a hundred of those on Steemit per day. Every time you post quality content, assist a newcomer with questions, vote down spam, and encourage productive discussion on the platform, you're doing a good deed. Being paid doesn't make it any less good. Actually, payment is the market affirming the value of your deed.
I'm sure you have good intentions with this campaign, Kate. I don't mean to suggest that it's dishonest but I just don't agree with the underlying premise. It's suggesting that all the valuable actions people take on Steemit every day aren't already good and that we need to make extra sacrifices and score bonus virtue points to be considered good ourselves. I also don't agree with the insinuation that earning money is a bad thing or that working in your own self-interest is a bad thing either. Incentives motivate people to provide more value to others, not less. This is the socioeconomic magic of Steemit. So out of principle, I'm going to decline your generous invitation and just continue with what I'm already doing rather than playing this game. I hope you have lots of fun without me. Cheers :)
Good deeds are the ones that go unrecognized and unrewarded. The action itself should be the primary motivation, always. Eventually, it's just how you are, not any particular deliberate act.
Tough road, few on it.
I heard something similar about this recently, ugh I can't remember where though! Someone was talking about the countless people throughout the ages who just made things that worked and so no one ever even thought to thank them. You don't win a nobel prize for making a good car. You get more recognition for making something broken and then fixing it than you do for just making something that works from the beginning. I think some people just are that way. Biologically driven to make things of value even if no one wants to thank you for it. Monetary compensation is the consolation prize not the ideal prize.
Now, this was a good read! If only stuff like this was up in the front of every headline!
haha thanks man.
agree. Headline is fine! Thanks for post.
Here, here, well said. Its all about the intention of your actions.
I agree, this couldn't be done differently? I don't like the non-voluntary aspect of things. Her intention could be good an noble, but I think this is not the way to do it at all. I think that was unnecessary.
As Doug Stanhope once said, remember the Tsunami in 2005? People always rally together on their own, take the voluntary part out of the equation, if they went door to door trying to collect donations like the IRS, then people will say Fuck those guys! People can do good things on their own, you don't need to force them to do it.
I'm sure I butchered the quote a little
This sounds like those annoying chain messages in which you will go to hell if you dont pass the text message on
@piedpiper
Sounds dodgy to me
I understand @jennamarbles' intention, and I'm sure it's a noble one. But I completely agree with you. Steemit can only work if every steemer here comes with the sole intention of writing and curating good content, engaging in interesting discussion with other steemers etc.
The moment it becomes about a competition, about money, about rewards, it leads to a slippery slope.
Completely agreed, this is one of the obstacles that Steemit needs to overcome to grow. 20k posts are not helping at all...how ironic.
Agree completely. I find the idea completely counter-productive to the mission of steemit that attracted me here in the first place. That's such a Facebook-y thing. Hopefully more will back us here.
I'm sorry if I offended you. I didn't mean what it could look like coercion or intimidation. I did not mean to say that you are not doing anything good. I've been watching your work, and admire her. I'm surprised it caused you such outrage. It's a game. To do a good thing. What could be easier? To feed a stray dog, to buy a hamburger to a homeless guy to do their work for free to one person, make someone smile. Anyone can do it. You are confusing cause and effect. View it is now filled with STEEMIT why people come here? Attracting new users, with thoughts of easy money for simple work (story about yourself, a couple of lines of text we get those who are earning the money goes. Whether they will make STEEMIT reliable? The same people that will come in STEEMIT to help others, with thoughts on charity, they will stay with the project for a long time. Money for them is not important in life. I want to show them that STEEMIT can become for them a platform where they can find like-minded people
Don't worry, I'm certainly not outraged. I just don't wish to participate in what you're doing. If you enjoy that sort of charity work, then by all means, do it for your own satisfaction but it's not something that I agree with and I prefer that others not try to coerce me into playing their games without my consent. That's all. I'm sure that's reasonable enough, right? :)
More than reasonable.
Thanks, I receive from it huge pleasure! My heart hurts when I see those who need help, before I was not able to help them, the teacher's salary is not so high in my country. STEEMIT gave me the opportunity to help those who need my help. And I'm happy. To each his own, you're right. Don't get me wrong. I think only of good. And again, if I hadn't called you, you would not have earned the money for your post.. I'm sure that's reasonable enough, right? Thank you. :)
Yes, indeed. Very reasonable. Good luck with your projects!
I see STEEMIT in the future, in addition to the above as one of the biggest platforms to raise funds for charity. In the world there are hundreds of large charitable organizations : Feed the Children, Music For Relief, Partners In Health, American Cancer Society, Stichting INGKA Foundation. As well as thousands of small. Animal shelters, groups social assistance, targeted assistance, aid to the homeless, private fees. In charity a part of hundreds of millions of people in the world.
And other Crowdfunding.
But there are all these sites one big drawback, microtransactions between the participants of these sites is ill-conceived, it's uncomfortable.
Microtransactions between users in STEEMIT are part of the whole system. Therefore, it can really compete with Kickstarter with their 140 million dollars a year.
To attract charity tried and Facebook, but again, micro-transactions between participants of these sites is ill-conceived, it's uncomfortable. STEEMIT will leave behind him.
The parish charities in STEEMIT will bring millions of people.
Also, the device STEEM POWER will cause the funds not to withdraw funds and leave them in the account. And it is possible to support users to directly UPVOTE their requests for help via hashtags. The funds also may decide to transfer part of their funds in STEEM POWER, to support the users directly when they apply through hashtags.
Unfortunately my initiative to attract charities and philanthropy development at STEEMIT are not supported. People do not understand that the parish charity/crowdfunding organizations on STEEMIT. If they declare it officially. Will force millions of people to come to STEEMIT
FORCING anybody to do ANYTHING is not honorable...
I have nothing against that would change that. For me, the main idea is to show people that STEEMIT can do amazing good things together. Let's change the rules of the game, I created them as I felt right. You think otherwise, and I can hear you. We're a community, we can discuss it. Tell me how, I do not have this experience. The idea of a marathon because good? Let's fill STEEMIT kindness and love. Let's keep the main thing:
I'm not looking for fame, I want to do good. Do NOT need to abandon their intentions. Fix my mistakes. Let's run this marathon together.
The reason why you dont get a lot of supports, is not because of the message. It's HOW you DELIVER the message. It came of as an attack. If you want to invite people to give back to the sociaty, invite EVERYONE. And without any terms.
Your heart is in the right place young jedi... but you still have some maturing to do.
Excuse me, I thought only about the good. I watched a lot of challenge on YouTube. And they all work on this principle. I'm not a marketer. I am an ordinary teacher.
I am very sad that all you see only 4 the point of my conversion. Although he is there symbolically. I didn't think someone would be able to refuse. Because to do good is so simple and is so nice. The main thing that I wanted to say and what message to convey:
We have shown thousands of people here that STEEMIT is an opportunity to do good together! Common efforts.
I just gotta ask, am i the only one whos noticing that "jenna" loses her ability to write in fluent english in post comments.
I spend many hours to prepare their posts, you're right. In the forum I use the program the translator, because nobody is going to wait for my answers too long.
YES. you beat me to it, mate.
I'm also going to write up a story today about my response, as I had quite a similar reaction to you. the girl's heart might be in the right place, but the delivery was NOT effective in winning support of her cause - essentially offering the ultimatium of "play MY game by MY rules, or you're a bad person."
respect for having authentically voiced your feelings on this matter.
Excuse me, I thought only about the good. I watched a lot of challenge on YouTube. And they all work. I'm not a marketer. I am an ordinary teacher. I wanted to run the marathon of good deeds that people would see that STEEMIT does a lot of good things. That people would help those who are near. Not that that would show that someone is a bad person.

I think by now we can all realize that most people (the majority) don't do good deeds on their own and when no one is watching. It takes a social phenomenon, clever thinking, and some social responsibility to get people to do the right thing more often than not. I think this is a great idea--since we are ultimately just social animals in the first place, let's just leverage the social aspect to make sure that people openly and consistently do good, because now they'll get accolades for it.. ;)
disagree. if it takes social PRESSURE to get someone to do a "good deed," it's not a good deed - it's one driven by a selfish desire for social approval - NOT a genuine heartfelt intention of service.
That 'chain letter' stuff never even passes the initial sniff test with me. Shaming others for profit... riiiiight!
Exactly. Unfortunately there are a lot of stupid people around.
