Thoughts on Today’s Quote

“Do it right the first time”

How many times I heard that drilled into me as I grew up. While my mother believed that it was the correct use of time to do a job correctly the first time, it instilled a fear of failure with all the attached sense of shame. As I matured I did come to realize not only was failure normal, it was an important part of learning. There is no shame in learning or failing.

It is liberating to come to the realization that making mistakes is simply determining how not to solve a problem. When we learn the many ways of how not to solve a problem, solving the problem becomes a lot easier to remember.

When we make mistakes we put our thinking skills to work in order to identify the mistake, analyze why it was mistake and determine a new approach to solving the problem. Sometimes, while solving one problem, we discover a solution to another problem through a mistake.

Thinking of problem solving like an adventure. Making mistakes is all part of the path to discovery and the victory of solving the problem.
