SketchCrazed – surreal, lurid, unzipped

SketchCrazed is an opportunity for me to share the very strange drawings I do. The common thread is in the attempt to explore new relationships of form, contrast, and pattern, and to see where they take me.

Masked Gods

And from the east, the revered east, which first lights and first shadows the steps of man, the sunlight floods the frosty plain and its silent throng. Refreshed, touched by the mystery surrounding their daily simple lives, made whole again, The People drift back to their camps, to their wagons – back into their wilderness with their scraggly teams, their blankets and silver, their strong and haughty faces.

And the old woman, the patient, her face is still touched by the mystery too. Exhausted, she stands for the moment between the present and the long trail where the pony tracks go only one way – perhaps made well, made whole again, or perhaps with the disease really untouched. Neither matters in the awakened strength of her rebirth. For if hers is soon to be the trail that must soon lead from all, and which, in time, must be theirs after her, she will follow it in the beauty, in the deeper peace, and with the assurance of another, brighter dawn.

After making this ink drawing, I did an acrylic painting based on the drawing. It is of course way more involved and takes on very different qualities. My sketches make good templates for paintings, since the main idea is already developed.
