"Lord Sandwich" Invented "The Sandwich"

Origins of The Sandwich

Turns out that the modern day Sandwich was invented by an Earl who frequently got drunk & spent long hours at the gambling table.

So...

To anyone who has ever said that nothing good comes from being a drunk & a gambler, I present to you this epic tale of:

The 4th Earl of Sandwich. John Montague. Lord Sandwich

Common Story

Legend has it that in order to avoid leaving the gambling table for meals, Lord Sandwich would request his servants to bring him meat between two sliced of bread. Eventually, this phenomenon caught on and his fellow gamblers began ordering "same as Sandwich," which eventually shortened to just "Sandwich." That's right folks, John Montague, the Earl of Sandwich, Lord Sandwich himself invented the modern day Mannwich.

The original creation was comprised of a piece of salty beef between two slices of toasted bread. Epic!

Alternate Story

While the gambling table is definitely the most popular (and entertaining) story by which the Sandwich came into existence, it is conversely claimed that The Earl more likely (first) invented the Sandwich while working at his office desk. In addition to practising his vices, John Montague was also an accomplished politician and military man who spent long hours working at his desk and did not tend to break for meals.

Taking this into consideration, it is also quite plausible that the first Sandwich was actually invented & consumed at his office desk and not at the card table where it was popularized.

Closing Thoughts

John was born in 1718 and died in 1792 meaning that The Sandwich was likely invented somewhere around the mid 1700's. So there you have it people, Lord Sandwich invented one of the greatest and most convenient foods of our time!

He invented, but @jaybird perfected.

Haha you hit the nail on the head! I never fancied sandwiches but can't stop making and eating them ever since I saw SSC :)

Dredging up past lives here I am sure. ha ha XD

Lord Sandwich haha. Probably had much healthier bread back then...

Oh I agree. He was a lord, prolly had the finest available :)

I much prefer the first story with Lord Sandwich...and a bite of a great sandwich right now! Cute post!

Ditto, it's the more entertaining for sure!

I pick the first tale, it's way more "manwichy".

It's definitely the one that resonated most with me

Love your little biography on the sandwich @jaybird but you know what, you've raised the humble sandwich to much grander heights here on steemit!

Ahaha I hope so. Especially in the 8 months SSC has been around things have definitely escalated on all accounts haha.

You've definitely been apart of that ;)

Haha, there’s actually an old Saturday night live skit about this from waaaay back in the day. I just always remember my dad making sandwiches and saying “Lord Sandwich!” in the most ridiculous accent because of that bit :)

Ya I've heard of it lol. Earl of Sandwich !

How do you think they were toasting the bread in the 18th century ?

Straight in the fireplace ?

Because I supposed they would not start the kitchen oven just for a sandwich...

I’m not really sure.

Probably on a grill or oven in all likelyhood. Most of the structures would have probably been heated by a fireplace or oven Anyway at that time soooo maybe that’s what happened. Also he was a lord so i’m sure whatever he wanted he got.
