A lot of people are no strangers to mental exhaustion. You may be suffering from it right now or have experienced it before. If so, you definitely know that it affects productivity negatively .
Mental exhaustion is caused by brain over-activity. When you feel overwhelmed by the things you have to do both at work and at home you experience mental unrest and frustration. Observing others who seem to be accomplishing goals effortlessly while you struggle because of your mental exhaustion can make you feel envious.
When a person is mentally exhausted they expend a lot time on tasks. And the more they struggle, the more their ability to focus is affected. Then things could worsen to the point where they find it almost impossible to concentrate. The consequence of this is that they begin to make more mistakes than than they normally make and their stress level increases to the point where they become depressed and their general health deteriorates and the people around them are negatively affected.

What are the signs and symptoms of mental exhaustion?

When a person feels tired emotionally and they are lacking motivation due to prolonged stress or frustration, they are suffering from mental exhaustion. Another common term for this is "burn out". These symptoms might at first not be easily noticeable but with time become clearly evident to the sufferer. It could get so bad that It will begin to affect them physically and in the way they behave. This should not be surprising since anything that affects the brain can affect the whole person.

Emotional symptoms:

It is normal for people who are not mentally exhausted to feel helpless sometimes. But mental exhaustion makes a person feel completely overwhelmed virtually all day. Positive thoughts become a scarce commodity as negative thoughts dominate their mind. They may become loners who see nothing ever working out for them because they have strong self-doubt.

Symptoms that are physical

Feeling tired almost all through the day and being highly prone to head, muscle or back aches and sickness in general. Even reduced appetite and deterioration in sleeping habit are physical signs of mental

Their Associating with friends may reduce because of the lack of energy required to do so. This could also lead to them constantly Postpone the handling of responsibilities that they would normally take on with enthusiasm. As work piles up and stress level inevitably increases, they may start abusing alcohol and drugs. Some people may begin to eat more while others less. All these are symptoms a person suffering for mental exhaustion is very likely to manifest.

What causes mental exhaustion?

Mental exhaustion usually does not happen suddenly, rather, it takes time to build up. Living a life where one has too many responsibilities, overworking oneself leads to increased stress level to the point where the mind and body can no longer take it. At this stage the symptoms of mental exhaustion begin to show.
With the ability to deal with stress affected, the person finds themself always tired. Sometimes leading to depression and other serious health problems.

Mental exhaustion complications

Mental exhaustion can bring undesirable consequences on a persons life. It can be so bad that every part of the person's life suffers. At work, the inability to perform will affect productivity for which a person can be sacked or demoted.
Their relationship with friends, loved ones and acquaintances can also suffer due to their inability to manage their moods and also play the role that they are supposed to play . Also because their brain interpretes simple physical tasks as too stressful, they are definitely not going to perform well in them.

How do you recover from mental exhaustion?

We often underestimate the ability of our bodies and minds to recover from physical and mental injuries. Among all animals man has the unique ability of observing himself think and seeing that even though he is presently overwhelmed by negative thoughts he can work to transform his mind. He knows that just as he has the ability to recover from physical injury, complete mental recovery is also achievable. Where the problem lies for most people is accepting that a change is needed if they are to regain their mental energy. Here are few easy tips that even with your scarce energy level you can use to put yourself on the road to recovery.

Relaxation

A major reason why people accumulate stress is because they do not create time to de-stress. So stress continues to accumulate to the point where signs that the person needs help begins to show. So finding time to do nothing but relax daily after work is important. This is best done in a place where there is no noise. This will have a positive impact on the rest of the day.

Reduce stimulation of your senses

When your senses are bringing too much light and noise into your brain, it would be difficult to truly relax. So being in a place where there is not too much light and noise and where you can rest free from the distractions of television and other devices ensures that you do not experience headache and lack of sleep. You can truly relax your mind and body.

Focus on the most important things

You may find yourself doing a lot of things, many of which are not really important. Yet those unimportant things are among what leaves you stressed. So why not do away with them and focus on the important things. You do not want to be stressed and become mentally exhausted such that you loose the energy required to do what really matters.

Get enough sleep

Sleep is very important. If you sleep mentally exhausted and you don't get the required hour of sleep you are only going to wake up tired and continue the cycle of mental exhaustion.

Whatever one does for a living, avoiding the trap of mental exhaustion is very necessary. We want to be well enough to continue to be productive individuals who are able to achieve their personal goals and play our roles in the society.

We really must focus on the most important things – but we must first identify them. Odd as it might sound, oftentimes we confuse urgent tasks with important ones, whereas they are actually distractions a lot of the time. Time management experts say that when viewed critically, urgent tasks are mostly tasks we do for others, with little benefit to ourselves, whereas important tasks directly contribute to our own goals. When we let urgent tasks take priority, we are already feeling burnt out by the time we get to the important ones, so we do them poorly or end up not doing them at all. The secret is to learn to delegate/outsource unimportant tasks as much as possible.

Yes, delegating tasks to others is a very good way of managing time. Sadly, some people have a problem believing in the abilities of others.

Nicely written. I suffered from mental exhaustion a while back and after a prolonged period of rest, I got my self and mind back
