Travel Diaries - #Throwbacks - Karnak Temple of Egypt

in #travel10 months ago

When you talk of Egypt, the first thing that comes to mind are the pyramids. They are world famous and among one of the 7 wonders of the world. The other things that are worth watching in Egypt are the Temples. The Country is full of Temples, just like India, the only difference is that these are now tourist attractions and there are no temple rituals that are happening in them.

Karnak is one of the famous temple near Luxor. This temple is quite of a significance. It is believed that this is from where the creation began and it was a point of connection between the god Amun-Ra and Egyptians. It is also the largest religious building all through history, covering about 200 acres.

At the entrance you will find this long line of Sphinxes. It is the body of a lion and the head of a Ram. They were believed to be the guardian of the temple

The Hypostyle Hall, which is the major attraction of this temple. It is build of columns which are 60 ft high and have some intricate designs on them. There are colors also used here but over the centuries they are faded. It is a Unesco world heritage site. Some movie shootings have also happened here. One of Tom cruise movie also had a shot here.

The Obelisk you can see behind. It is made of a single block of pink granite, which is 29 meters high. In the past Egypt had many such Obelisk and many of them were gifted to other Countries. There are such similar ones in Paris, London and New York which have been gifted by Egypt.
