CadEditor is the universal level editor for NES/SMD/SNES/Game Boy games, the introduction of the project was here

Introduction

cad_tale_spin1.png
I'll describe the new hack, made with CadEditor by user Roket. The game includes new redesigned levels, made with blocks from games Tale Spin и Mickey Mouse Adventures in Numberland.

The hack version is 1.6beta and it has minor bugs, but they are not critical, so game is full playable and complete.

How to play

  1. You need original ROM-file of the game. File has name Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers (U) [!].nes. It's the original copy of Capcom game. You can download it any site with ROMS or via torrents.
  2. Download patch Chip & Dale: Tale Spin Levels from here . Patches are the standarddistribution method for the romhacks.
  3. You must apply the patch to the original file with Lunar IPS or any other patching utility. The process is easy - you must select the original file, the patch file, and click on "Patch" button. If you don't want to patch file yourself, you can use the ready file from here.
  4. You need NES emulator for run ROM-file. My favourite emulators: Fceux, Bizhawk, Mesen. Load ROM-file to the emulator and enjoy!

Project review

Author - Roket
Status - ready, updates
Difficult - little harder than original
Description - Game includes new levels, music from Tale Spin, hard bosses' arenas. Nice design of levels. Minor defects and graphical glitches on last levels, and in the bosses' arenas.

Some technical informaion

The game can be opened in CadEditor for viewing levels and changing them.
For example, my favorite level E:
cad_chip_hack.png

Title screen:cad_chip_hack2.png

It's encoded by simple encoding, that I call "Canvas encoding" - instead of describing all screen with blocks, it describes only several commands that executed like: "Go to coordinates (X,Y) and draw N blocks line there". More about this encoding here(Russian article).

Capcom games used one music engine, so music data can be copied from one to other with Hex editor. Track numbers on levels can be changed with PluginLevelParamsCad plugin for CadEditor.

Hello, @pinkwonder!

Thank you for your contribution. This is another interesting part of this series, and I like all the information regarding the new hack. Your post is comprehensive and well-illustrated. Keep up the good work!

On the content side, even though I like all the information provided, I have to admit that this looks like an article skeleton for the most part. I wanted to read a little more about pretty much everything; this would have been a great post if you had shared a few more words about the project review, for instance.

That said, there were style and proofreading issues. Regardless, I appreciate the effort you put into your work, and look forward to your next contribution.
