Mind, Body, Energy Training - The Mantra
Figure 1 - SamantaBhadra on the Summit of Eimei
The great thing about the Wing Chun Qi Gong training course is that it trains every layer of your being.
- Kung Fu trains the Body.
- Qi Gong trains the Energy.
- Virtue trains the Spirit.
- Mantra trains the Mind.
Since I've touched on Qi Gong and Kung Fu in my previous posts, let's take a look a Mantra...
Mantra
For those unfamiliar with what mantra is, it is more than just repeating foreign sounds.
In short, a mantra is a set of primary sounds that act like a key to unlocking a secret energetic door. That secret energetic door is usually a direct connection back to a previous master who created the mantra. They were once human like you and I, but attained Enlightenment, so still exists in the higher Energetic realms.
(Now, if you don't believe in what I have just said, then don't. I am not asking for you to blindly believe. Also, do not argue with me, as it is one of those useless items to argue about, much like "what happens after death?".
What I ask is, that if you wish to prove the statement right or wrong, simply do the practice I outline in these posts. And if you follow the instructions but nothing happens, then you've successfully tested that what I have said is false. Recall, I said earlier that Wing Chun Qi Gong is scientific - no belief system required, just test and verify.
Mantra vs Japa
So now you know at a much deeper level what a mantra is. But in order to unlock the door, you need to repeat the mantra many times either via verbal chanting or silently using mental thought. And it is this repetition of the mantra that is called Japa.
So remember, Mantra is useless with Japa. It is like having a seed but never planting it.
Mantra Prerequisites
There are many types of Mantra in the world. If we look to the Tibetan Buddhists, they have a number of Mantras that do not work unless you have gone through proper preparation and initiation rituals. So if you could read the text and started to recite it many times, it would still do you no good.
That is what is great about the Mantras I am going to share with you. They do not require any elaborate ceremonies, and anyone, anywhere can practice immediately. The only prerequisite is that you practice Virtue and try your best to eliminate Evil from your life.
Wing Chun Roots in Eimei
Unbeknownst to a lot of Wing Chun schools, Wing Chun is rooted in Eimei. In addition, Wing Chun includes some form of Mantra. Unfortunately this art has been lost due to secrecy, so most do not know this is the case, and those that do, may not use all the correct syllables. For example, when I was taught this technique, the master had no idea what I am about to disclose to you in this blog - I discovered it later in my research and then realised what had been passed along to me.
My intention therefore is to use this post in order to clear some of these items up.
Firstly, the root source of the Wing Chun Qi Gong Mantra is directly from Buddhism. Specifically, Bodhisattva Samantabhadra who is the patron of the Lotus Sutra. You may recall I said a part of Wing Chun has its roots in the Eimei Mountain school. This is the side of Wing Chun represented by the Snake, whilst the Crane represent Shaolin - These stories are metaphoric with hidden meanings and only the uninitiated take them literally.
Anyway, Samantabhadra is directly linked to the Emei school and this is evident with the golden statue of him on the summit (See Figure 1). And it is his Mantra that was handed down to me...
In addition, having Samantabhadra being the patron of Lotus Sutra is interesting too, since this is one of the key texts the First Patriarch of Chinese Zen, Bodhidharma, carried with him from India as he transmitted the teachings to the second Patriarch. Interestingly, when we look at the Zen school of China only a few generations post Bodhidharma, we see that they switched to using the Diamond Sutra as a core text instead. Did they go against the original wishes of Bodhidharma? This is a good question.
So even with some schools of Zen, you see this trend where they do not practice "all" the original teachings transmitted from India, but instead practice say, a Gong An, like "What is the sound of one hand clapping?" with some quiet sitting. The point being, if you do not look around and are too rigid on one school, you may miss out on aspects of the original teachings...And this has many cross overs to Wing Chun teachings that have been lost as masters never had the chance to pass them on.
Samantabhadra's Mantra
Now, what is interesting, is that this Mantra is found within other Kung Fu schools, but a lot have forgotten what its purpose is, do not use all the syllables, do not perform it properly, and also have no understanding of its original root origins or why they are doing it.
I hope from the writings so far you now understand the purpose behind the mantra to train the mind and open you up energetically, as well as the origins of where the mantra sprung from. For more research on Samantabhadra start by looking here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samantabhadra
So, now that I've covered the root origins as well as its purpose, let's start with mapping out all the syllables of the Mantra. In this case, it is quite easy, since there are only three:
OM AH HUNG
That's it!
So for now, I need you to memorise these three syllables and in a later post, I'll demonstrate on how they can be used to perform the technique properly on what was handed down to me.
Practice
Find a quiet place to sit or stand in Yee Jee Kim Yang Ma.
Inhale mentally repeat OM AH HUNG
Hold mentally repeat OM AH HUNG
Exhale mentally repeat OM AH HUNG
Hold mentally repeat OM AH HUNG
Repeat

I practice Wing Chun and Qi Gong Tai Chi, and I’ll be very interested to see them further explained in your posts! Thank you for this starting place. As of now I can see several synergistic qualities to both practices, both training movements and patience, with qi gong being more internal and closer to a meditation while Wing Chun more of a self defense style. I’m sure I have many misconceptions and I’ll follow to see if any clear up. I’m also writing on meditations including Tai Chi, feel free to check out my blog and followed list for se resources you might find useful. Best!
Thank you for your comments. Feel free to ask questions at any time. One gains wisdom through making mistakes, so no such thing as a silly question and very humble of you admitting that you may have misconceptions - one should always have this mindset to eliminate misinformation.
