The fun of watching movies in a Theatre

I have been a movie freak all my life. It is like a ritual for me watching one movie a week in the Theatre. And this has been since my childhood days. In those days it was not once a week movie time, but still it was often. My dad was a movie freak as well and he would always take me along and then when I got married, I got my hubby into the same habit. We started going more often and then gradually it became like a weekend affair, going to the cinema hall and watching movie. Movie with popcorn and samosa was kind of a ritual, nowadays the ritual is just the movie minus the snack :-)

During the Covid times when the cinema halls were shut down, I missed it a lot :-) hehehe. I had no OTT platforms till then, No Netflix or Amazon or any other OTT platform. And during Covid times also I was not sure if I should get it or not. But then few months back when my niece visited me, she insisted that I get Netflix connection and so I got it and since then last few months I now have the OTT platforms installed. On and off I do watch movies on them, but I still prefer the big screen. The theatre vibe is no match to anything else.

The other reason I also got convinced into getting Netflix was that nowadays there are so many movies which directly get released on OTT and do not get released in cinema halls and some of these movies are really good. Also, not all the Hollywood movies get released in cinema halls so Netflix does help with that. The other benefit is that now living in Oman I would miss out on many Bollywood movies, with the OTT I can cover up those.

At the same time there are many disadvantages that I see. The OTT platform movies most of the time I find them with a lot of violence and foul language like there are no filters at all and it does not make me feel comfortable watching it with other family members. Like some time back when my mom was with me, I would pick up very few selected movies which I will be sure that they are just normal family dramas and no vulgarity. It does make me uncomfortable.
And the other disadvantage is that it is so conveniently available, you end up watching anytime you want and you may not realize that you are using up some valuable productive time. Especially the lengthy series which gets so addicting once you start.

I had started watching the series Manifest and I got so gripped in it that I wanted to keep watching it without any stop and I had to force myself mindfully to stop after every 2 episodes.

There are pros and cons of both the Theatre and the OTT. Any day I still prefer going to a Cinema hall and watching a movie over watching it on the OTT platforms. The big screen fun is at a different level.

What is your preference?
