From a man who set out to unlearn doubt...

Steve was a born doubter. His motto in life seemed to be: "I fundamentally doubt everything and everyone." He questioned every piece of news, every rumour, every story, every information and every instruction. Some people around him admired his critical way of thinking, while others found his constant scepticism a hindrance.

After many years of doubt, but also constant dissatisfaction, Steve decided to go on a journey to finally find out the truth about the nature of the world. He wanted to discover whether all his doubts were justified or whether there were perhaps things he could accept without having to constantly verify them. So, with a rucksack and his unshakeable spirit, he set off...

The wise old man

On his hike, Steve came across an old man sitting under a tree. He seemed wise and experienced, and Steve decided to have a chat with him.

"And why are you so sceptical anyway?" asked the old man after Steve had told him his story. "I believe that doubt protects me from costly mistakes and lies," Steve replied. The old man nodded in understanding. "Doubt can be a shield. But also a prison. Let me tell you a story...

The story of the palace with three doors

There was once a special king whose palace had three different entrance doors. Each door led to a different path in life. The first door promised knowledge, the second confidence and the third security. Many people came to this palace, but they all had to choose which door they wanted to enter through.

A young man called Quintus Fabius Maximus[1] once came to the palace and stood in front of the three doors. He was just as sceptical as you, Steve. He doubted the authenticity of the promises behind the doors and spent days examining them thoroughly without making a decision. His doubts paralysed him and he couldn't take one step further.

Another man, Georg Simmel[2], also came to the palace. He chose the door of trust without hesitation. He entered and found himself in a world full of people who relied on him and helped him at all times in return. Through his trust, he gained knowledge and security that went far beyond the promises of the doors.

A third, Christian Morgenstern[3], chose the door of knowledge. He investigated and scrutinised everything he found, and through his search for knowledge he found confidence and security in his own wisdom."

The lesson

After the old man finished his story, he looked deep into Steve's eyes. "Doubt is useful, Steve, but it shouldn't stop you from making decisions. Sometimes you have to trust and take a step forward to find out what you're really looking for...!"

Steve thought long and hard about the story he had heard. He realised that although his doubts had saved him from many mistakes, they had also prevented him from really living. He thanked the old man from the bottom of his heart and continued his journey, this time with a new approach.

The change

As he continued on his path, Steve began to use his doubts purposefully. He still questioned things that seemed dodgy, but he also practised having confidence and making confident decisions. He discovered new friends, learnt from different cultures and ultimately found a deeper understanding of the world.

Eventually Steve returned home, no longer the eternal sceptic, but a smarter man who knew when it was time to doubt and when it was time to trust. Neighbours and colleagues admiringly noticed the change and began to appreciate him as a source of wisdom and balance.

Steve went on to live happier with his realisation that doubt and trust must go hand in hand to make a truly fulfilling life possible.

Sort:

One of the forms of doubt is Imposter syndrome when people start doubting their skills and talent.

It makes a person lose many chances and restrict them to excel.

For instance: women, who doubt if their clothes are good or if their make-up is perfect or not, kill the charm.
I once was like these women, fortunately, not anymore.

Only a wise person knows when to doubt and when to not(only a small %age).

Oh, I've read about the different forms of Impostor Syndrome. May I ask if you had any help to overcome it? Or have you "grown up"...?

You are on your own

I had had help in the form of a good self help book, or a good piece of content on YT, but above all life teaches you like no one else can.

A strange story but good.
Around here, the rains suddenly stopped. The air is filled with smoke. It's not a lot of smoke like it was the last two days but it is still smoky. The fires are in California. It's a long ways away. The wind blows hard now from the southwest and down there is Arizona, Southern Nevada, and California. It is very hot there. Always has been but not nearly as hot as Red Bluff, California which is in the north or Lawton, Oklahoma where for some reason it's hot to 125 F every day in the spring, summer, and fall.

Both places are lush. It's hot for some reason. And it's been super hot there forever. Here where I live, it used to be covered in trees, filled running creeks, and ponds. Just to the east is Fish lake National Forest. There are a lot of little lakes, ponds really, nestled here and there in the high mountains.
There Cove Creek now dry and the Beaver River drying up.

All because of what I have written about, fought, and perhaps lost.

Written, fought and perhaps lost... As long as there is a "maybe", is there hope? Perhaps lost is also perhaps won...

I do like a positive attitude. I do think this battle(s) I (we) are in is beyond our understanding to determine victory. Then again, there was one whole heck of a dust storm with the today and clouds above it. So that I could not tell if it was rain or not. Yet every once in a while there was a series taps on the metal roof. I suspect that was some sort of precipitation.

For those ones that have gotten heart break, several times. How do we convince them to fall in love again because at some point they see every guy or lady as a suspect and refusing to trust again…

That sounds logical and understandable - and wrong! How are you going to find the one person who suits you and is loyal to you if you don't trust anyone? And yes, I know that it can be a Herculean task to overcome your mistrust. One that is worth it!

It is an interesting story without a doubt. I like how you combine several in one. A pleasure to read you 🤗 until next time.

It was an experiment ;-)) I think it worked...
